So after I did a repair install of XP for a previous problem I went to Windows Update. It said I needed to install Windows Installer 3.1 to continue. Instead of saying it was done, it said it was unable to install. Then I downloaded the file manually and went to install. It said something about not having permissions, or access denied. I thought it was because my system restore was screwed up, but that's now fixed, so I don't know what the problem is now.

Are you administrator? If the permissions are screwed up, go into the Control panel and make sure you're an admin.

Yes, I'm an admin. I first tried it under the Administrator account too.

I tried it again, it says, "Access is denied." Would it have anything to do with my system restore not working previously?

Anyway, is there a list of updates I can download manually for now?

Or try Dial-A-Fix to re-register the Windows Installer DLL's. Free from here: http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix#Standard_version

FWIW - had a similar issue with the big boss's computer yesterday. Convinced him to do a complete restore because it'd be a lot quicker than having us troubleshoot it (It's a Compaq). So we backed up his data, restored it, and he was able to take it home by 7:00 pm
