Hello,

I notice from your log that you are running more than one different Anti-Virus programs with Auto-protect enabled. Symantec/Norton and AVG Antivirus.
Never install more than one Antivirus and Firewall! Rather than giving you extra protection, it will decrease the reliability of it seriously!
The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Also because more than one Antivirus and Firewall installed are not compatible with eachother, it can cause system performance problems and a serious system slowdown.

I would strongly advise you to only have one Anti-Virus with the Auto-Protect feature running at any one time!
If you decide to only keep one Anti-Virus installed,
you should uninstall the other(s) through the Add or Remove Programs option in Control Panel.

Also, I see you have Viewpoint installed...
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
Go to start > controlpanel > software > add/remove programs and uninstall next if present:

Oin
Yazzle by Oin
YazzleActiveX By OIN
Purityscan by Oin
MediaTickets by OIN
Snowballwars by Oin
Cowabanga by OIN
or anything similar with Oin in it.

Reboot when done! Really important!

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

* Download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished and after reboot (in case it asks to reboot), it should open a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.

I did everything you said except uninstall one of the antivirus programs. I would prefer to keep AVG, but when I click the button to remove the Symantec program, i get an error message saying "Fatal error during installation". I don't really get that at all...maybe you can help me with that too. Here's my Combo fix log, followed by my new HJT log.

Hello,

Let's deal with the rest now..

Please set your system to show all files.
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Please hide your hidden files and folders afterwards again, when we are done with this thread and your problems are solved, because above instructions to set your system to show all files, unhide legit files and folders as well.
And I don't want you to delete them because they may look suspicious. To hide them again, just perform the above instructions in the opposite way.

Delete next folders:

C:\VundoFix Backups
C:\Qoobox
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
C:\Program Files\?asks <== this folder, will look like tasks, be careful here, don't delete the tasks folder in your C:\Windows-folder !!!
C:\Program Files\Common Files\frqf
C:\WINDOWS\dXNlcg

Your HijackThislog looks clean again.

  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
Yes, it's a common issue with uninstalling Norton/Symantec.

To fully remove Norton AntiVirus, you should go here and download the files and print the instructions for removal, and follow them after uninstalling NAV:
How to uninstall Norton AntiVirus 2003/2004/2005/2006/2007 (note: this removes ALL Norton 2003/2004/2005/2006/2007 products from your computer)
How to uninstall Norton AntiVirus 2000/2001/2002

Also read this article in case you're having problems with uninstalling Norton if above instructions didn't work, or noticed problems after uninstalling Norton:
http://basconotw.mvps.org/SymRem.htm

Scan again with Spybot s&d and in case you're still getting the Command Service being found, do next:

Please download delcmdservice (by Marckie), and save it to your Desktop.
  • Unzip the content to your Desktop (a folder named delcmdservice)
  • Double-click on the delcmdservice folder
  • Double-click on delreg.bat to launch the tool
  • When the tool has finished, please reboot your computer
Let me know in your next reply how things are now.

Finally, command service is off my PC. Thank you!

What was even more troublesome was getting Symantec out of my computer. I deleted all the Symantec files and folders, uninstalled with the help of the Windows Installer Cleanup tool, deleted all the registry keys, and ran the Norton removal tool. I'm pretty sure it's out now, although I see a couple of Symantec things at the end of this HJT log, which I will post to also make sure that I'm otherwise clean. I did try to fix them but they just came back the next time I ran HJT.

Hi,

I see you didn't update your Sun Java yet. I can't stress how important this is.

To get rid of the leftovers from Norton, do next..

Check and fix next entries in HIjackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [vptray] C:\PROGRA~1\SYMANT~1\VPTray.exe
O20 - Winlogon Notify: NavLogon - C:\WINDOWS\system32\NavLogon.dll

The O23 entries won't get fixed in HIjackThis anyway, so to delete them..

Go to start > run and copy and paste next commands in the field:

sc delete DefWatch Hit enter

sc delete SavRoam Hit enter

Then REBOOT your computer.

After reboot, delete next file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\NavLogon.dll

This should get rid of the leftovers.

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.

I tried downloading the update for Java the other day when you told me to, but it said their system was offline for maintenance. It still says that, so I guess i'll wait some more...
