Using SBC Yahoo Protection (current). Problems began w/virus allowed by my clicking "uninstall" (best I remember) instead of the 'X' box on a screen pop-up that got past my firewall. Have run several spyware removal tools; Ad-Aware simply finds low priority cookies. CPU gets bogged down. Have been operating in Safe Mode offline trying to resolve problem. "Avast" removal tool conflicts with system from SBC Yahoo, causing Anti-Virus scan to not function.
Conducting my posting & seeking responses on alternate computers since operation too slow on problem computer. Hope to find your log responses by my logging in with my username from alternate computers.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The following .exe are shown on Task Manager during Safe Mode:
taskmgr, SBCSSvc, svchost, svchost, svchost, lsass, services, winlogon, csrss, smss, System, System Idle Process SYSTEM

Once it's done scanning, click the "Remove Vundo" button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click "YES".
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed,it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click "OK".
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt into your next reply.

Note:

Problems are big on the home computer. Computer opens in Active Desktop Recovery, and if I'm trying to open more than one window it's restarting. Obtained the VundoFix results below but couldn't generate HijackThis summary to give you, unless you know method to save results on a thumbdrive as that is how I'm gathering & sending this info via alternate computers.
SpyBot had clean results but there are some other odd things showing up- often addressed by the active spyware tools.
Odd things: System 32/JKHFG.dll, Win32/Darksma.X, trojan.dl.downhook, Purityscan, and there's a button for "Cnyhkey" at start-up.
I keep it disconnected from the internet. To run software I need to download, open, & update (if needed) everything on a thumbdrive, then access that on the home computer- most effectively through safe mode.
The CPU is being consumed to such an extent that, once an item appears I mouse click it then walk away for a while. There are over 70 .exe start-up's showing in TaskManager under normal mode.
Will be re-affirming rules with my kids after this- like don't download anything!
Sorry this is so incomplete from what you were requesting.
HELP!!!

Looks like I ran this fix twice- here are those results:

VundoFix V6.4.1

Hi.
Found a bleeping link with similar problems (believe it was by "amateur") - have enacted most instructions with good results so far but not out of the woods yet. Hope this doesn't throw off your assistance; had to try some steps just to produce the logs you needed. Most notable changes happened after running VudoFix and then AVG Anti-Spyware. I can post more complete steps taken if you need that.
So now at least all the icons show up quickly in Safe Mode- compuer still seems to hang up in normal mode although I can now open more than one window at a time.

If needed I can switch between a laptop and the home computer from the same home site- or maybe try to get the wireless up and running. The laptop has protective software installed.

I'd still like to reduce the number of start up programs as the system begins to operate more effectively. Thanks for all your help to date & in advance.

Exit Hijackthis.

Scan with DrWeb-CureIt as follows:
* Double-click on drweb-cureit.exe to start the program. An "Express Scan of your PC" notice will appear.
* Under "Start the Express Scan Now", Click "OK" to start. This is a short scan that will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the Yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it.
* Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
* Choose the "Scan tab" and UNcheck "Heuristic analysis"
* Back at the main window, click "Select drives" (a red dot will show which drives have been chosen)
* Then click the "Start/Stop Scanning" button (green arrow on the right) and the scan will start.
* When done, a message will be displayed at the bottom advising if any viruses were found.
* Click "Yes to all" if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
* When the scan has finished, look if you can see the icon next to the files found. If so, click it, then click the next icon right below and select "Move incurable".
(This will move it to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if it can't be cured)
* Next, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list.
* Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
* Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
* Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
* After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)

Also post a new Hijackthis log please.
Let me know how your pc is running now.

RichieUK,
Things are better but still slow- 40+ sec to populate the Control Panel window; a couple minutes for icons to arrive on the desktop before that. I think I'm a bit heavy with Spyware removal software. Should I turn on the shield in AVG Anti Spyware? Still looking to streamline the whole system.
However- progress, and I'm thankful for that.
Open to more suggestions- at least I'm accessing this forum from the problem computer!
Thanks for your continued help; here are the two logs:

You’ve got Avast4 and eTrust AntiVirus[Yahoo!\Antivirus\ISafe.exe] and PC Tools AntiVirus installed.
Not a good idea to have more than one antivirus program installed on your computer.
Each program may interpret the actions of the other as viral, therefore giving you false virus warnings about virus-related activities.
It could also lead to system slowdowns and other problems within the operating system, due to the three conflicting with each other.
You should uninstall two of them as soon as possible, then restart your pc.

******************************

You have AVG Anti-Spyware and Sunbelt CounterSpy and eTrust PestPatrol installed, you should uninstall two of them to save on system resources.
I personally would stick with Counterspy.
Having all three installed is just overkill and completely unnecessary.
Restart your pc when you've done.

******************************

Download\install CleanUp.
Launch CleanUp,then click on 'Options'.
Now move the slider on the left up to 'Standard Cleanup!'.
Click 'Ok',now run the program by clicking on the 'Cleanup' button.
Reboot,or log off/log on when it's finished.

Let me know how your pc is running when you've finished.

Ahhhh...
Finally a usable, quiet operating system! I've removed some of the spyware & virus software & made sure what I'm using is & stays updated. Still think I've got too much start-up software overall but will monitor & adjust that over time.

Amazing just how crippling certain viruses are; so glad there are individuals like you out there with similar knowledge to the virus developers but choosing to use your skills positively.

Expect that I'll be getting a portable hard drive to off-load much of my important, less frequently accessed content from this computer. Even with protective software there's always risk when operating on-line.

Thanks for all the help! Great job! :flowers:

OK, just when it looks like I'm out of the woods I ran CounterSpy and found the following:

Scan History Details
Start Date: 5/27/2007 10:02:00 AM
End Date: 5/27/2007 10:44:19 AM
Total Time: 42 Min 19 Sec
Detected security risks

Trojan.Win32.Qhost.hf Trojan more information...
Status: Deleted

Registry entries detected
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\URLS

Trojan-Downloader.Win32.VB.fn Trojan Downloader more information...
Status: Deleted

Files detected
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SBO

Where did these come from?
I did delete the files you ID'd, plus the quarantine (maybe I shouldn't have done that?). Does deleting a quarantine risk it's re-entering my system?
Also I presume you believe that CounterSpy is definitely worth the purchase. I haven't yet upgraded the Java, nor your suggestions below the deletes in your last response. Will proceed once everything looks good.

So just in case here's another HijackThis Log:

Have Hijack This fix the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and selecting 'Fix checked'.
Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing:
O20 - Winlogon Notify: WgaLogon - C:\WINDOWS\

***********************************

Run 'BitDefender Online Scanner' using Internet Explorer:
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
Read the 'END USER SOFTWARE LICENSE AGREEMENT' then click 'I agree'.
You'll be prompted to install the activex control, please do so.
Once installed, disable your current antivirus program, then click the 'Click here to scan' button.
The virus signatures will then load.
Once loaded the scan will start.
The scan will take quite some time so please be patient.
Once the scan has finished select the 'Detected Problems' tab.
Click on 'Click here to export scan'.
Save the file as an HTML file to your desktop.
Then click on the saved file and allow it to open with your browser.
Go to 'Edit'/'Select All' then copy and paste that log into your next reply.

*Note*
Don't forget to re-enable your antivirus program.

Did 1st step in HijackThis. Re-ran & item is gone.

Neither BitDefender "I Agree" or >button will enable- I'm using using IE7- tried refreshing & revisiting website. I have Firefox as my primary if that's interfering. There's an offer for "offline" scanner below their button but that's not what you requested.

Haven't disable any current spyware yet.

Am I doing something wrong or are there other options?
Thanks.
