I use a linksys wrt54g or something like that and I find the user interface to be good plus it is a division of Cisco systems. They can usually be found for $100 - $120 here in Canada.

Best how? Works in a thunderstorm best, or, best I can buy for $50? Built in firewall and automatic updates best, or I can reach it across town best?

Define best. It might make it easier for us to make recommendations.

ill have my laptop working with the router, my occasional xbox with my wifi adapter and ill have my other computer which wont need the wifi because it will be connected through cables.

Just be sure to enable the wireless security so that your connection doesn't get hijacked. It si pretty simple to do from the user interface and also don't forget to change the admin password from the default.
