Well, I've just gotten a popup out of nowhere today, so I decided to scan my system with a few different scanners. However, I'm not sure if everything had been gotten rid of. (And looking at the Hijackthis log, they probably haven't) I'm running Vista, by the way.

Also very un-related, but Youtube has been extremely slow ever since I upgraded to vista. Not sure if that's a system problem or just some configuration problems.

Hi WIS,
welcome to BleepingComputer. My name is Rosty and I'm going to help you with your log.

Please download VundoFix.exe
to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above
instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when
VundoFix appears at reboot.

Next,

please, download HostExpert from here and let it run.

[*] Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Alright, I've got a problem.

I ran VundoFix, clicked the Remove Vudno button after it has finished scanning. So the whole desktop went away and the screen went black. After like thirty minutes or something, it still hasn't changed so I hard-rebooted my computer. I ran it again, did the same thing. Except this time, when I rebooted, my Windows wont' reboot. It just gets stuck after a loading screen. So I popped my Windows Vista upgrade disk in, booted from that and ran "Repair Windows", I let it run a little application and it told me to reboot, which I did. Now, I still can't reboot, and I can't even boot from a CD anymore.

Is there any hope or should I try re-formating? For some reason, I can't run the "System Recovery" function when I start my windows. When I press F10 it won't work. But I can still enter the Setup (F1) and boot menu (Esc) though I can't boot in Safe Mode, I don't think.

I have tried to access the screen that would let me get to safe mode. I used to access it by pressing F8 as the computer booted. But I don't think I can access the screen. I will keep trying, though.

Also, I was able to boot into the Vista CD again yesterday. But I ran the system repair thing again and it didn't do much. Next time, I will try to do a windows restore or restore from backup.

So far, these are the screens I am able to access:
- Setup (BIOS, I think)
- Boot Menu
- Occasionally Windows Vista boot disk

I have managed to access the Windows Vista upgrade disc again. I tried System Restore and recover PC from Backup, however, System Restore said I had no restore points (Which I think I have) and the Recover PC from Backup function could not find a diskdrive/dvd with a backup on it. Even though, I do have a drive labeled RECOVERY.

I am also able to access Command Prompt, if that helps. I am also able to install Vista again. (As a clean install with all the previous windows files moved)

Hi WIS,

I'm afraid I've some bad news for you. I've asked for help on my collegues and did some research. I'm thinking the best way is to do a reinstall.

I am also able to install Vista again. (As a clean install with all the previous windows files moved)

Please do. If you have some problems don't be afraid to ask for help in the vista forum: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/72/windows-vista/

Sorry that I couldn't help you better with your problem.

Regards,

Rosty.

EDIT: please wait another day, I've asked advice on somebody who knows a lot more about vista then me.

Hi WIS,

I've got an answer from the guy I've asked help on.

A few questions may help to clear things up.

What boot menu are you able to access? The one in the BIOS, or the Windows boot menu, or the boot menu that says "Safe Mode" etc?

What options have you tried on the Vista repair menu? Which one's haven't you tried?

How do you boot to the Vista DVD? It's been my experience that booting to the Windows Vista DVD works very smoothly all of the time - as long as you have a DVD drive and you boot to the DVD before the system tries to boot to Windows (through the BIOS boot menu, not the Windows one). If that's how you're doing it, then it's likely that there's a hardware problem that's preventing this from happening - and that will take a bit to troubleshoot.

Have you run any diagnostics on your system (such as MemTest86 or a hard drive testing utility)?

Here's a link to a free download of MemTest86: http://www.memtest86.com/
Here's a link to a free hard drive utility that works with most hard drives (non-SATA): http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/technolo/dft/dftnew.htm

Hi WIS,

thanks for the fresh log.
Seems you get rid of the Vundoinfecion.

Please open HijackThis, click do a scan only and place a check next to the following entries:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Close all other windows and browsers, except HijackThis, and click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis.

Please post a new HijackThis log and let me know how things are running.
