Can you install an XP OEM over a Vista one?

You can do anything after formatting a hard drive. Are you talking about a full OS or a recovery disk?

Yes, it will work fine. Just boot to the installation CD and format over the drive.

If this is a new PC however, you may want to consider staying with Vista. (Just my humble opinion.)

I hate vista with a passion, I'd rather run XP if at all possible

Then go for it. It will work fine...just make sure you have all the DRIVERS for your computer readily available to install.
