I am trying to transfer my data from a gateway pc to a HP vista pc. I can connect the belkin easy transfer cable and it is recognized by both computers. Then a message saying it has received an error and must close. I loaded the software on both systems.

According to Belkin, the Easy Transfer Wizard does not support 64 Bit operating systems.

Vista is not 64 bit unless it's Vista Ultimate which has both 32 bit and 64 bit, or you specifically order a 64 bit version. So Belkin has a viable product as a 32 bit to 32 bit transfer cable. The original poster did not state 64 bit.
