Hello all

I have recently experienced an intrusion by malware, which involves a number of popups appearing on my computer, usually related to the following websites/products: 888.com, 'winantiviruspro2006' and 'everyclick'. Also, my resident AVG on access scanner (along with McAffee on access scanner) both keep detecting files of the form winxxx.tmp in my windows folder. I have tried deleting these files, along with the related winxxxx32.dll file (as researched from the solution to this problem on another site). I have run spybot S&D, AVG antivirus, AVG antispyware, AdawareSE and Avast. These haven't helped. The popups are more prevalent when using IE but have also had them using firefox. I have run HJT, and my log is given below. I would greatly appreciate any advice given. Upon posting this message, I am redirected to a message warning against the use of trend micro HJT, and recommeding using the older version. Unfortunately when I try using this version it simply closes the program whenever I click on 'save log', rendering it useless - I have no idea why. Thankyou.

Welcome to the BleepingComputer HijackThis Logs and Analysis forum MagicAdam

You’ve got Avast4,AVG7 Free,and Mcafee installed.
Not a good idea to have more than one antivirus program installed on your computer.
Each program may interpret the actions of the other as viral, therefore giving you false virus warnings about virus-related activities.
It could also lead to system slowdowns and other problems within the operating system, due to them conflicting with each other.
You should uninstall two of them as soon as possible, then restart your pc.

*************************

Please uninstall HiJackThis_v2.exe via Start/Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs, then restart your pc.
As this version of Hijackthis is in BETA form its not to be relied on.

Now download and install Hijackthis.
This is a self-extracting version which will automatically install HJT to C:\Program Files\Hijackthis by default.
A desktop shortcut can be created during install under 'Select Additional Tasks'.

*************************

You’re running msconfig in Auto mode which means that you may have selectively unchecked some items in the past from starting up with Windows.
This can be bad if they’re malware, so please re-enable those startup entries by doing the following:
Click on Start>Run,type msconfig and then press Enter.
When the ‘System Configuration Utility’ opens click on the ‘Startup’ tab, make sure all the boxes are checkmarked.
Then press Apply/Ok to exit the utility.
If it asks you to restart your pc,please don’t,it‘s not necessary to reboot to get the items to show in the Hijackthis log.

*************************

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
When VundoFix re-opens,click the "Scan for Vundo" button.
Once it's done scanning, click the "Remove Vundo" button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click "YES".
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed,it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click "OK".
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt into your next reply.

Note:
It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case,VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

*************************

Please download Combofix and save to your desktop:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/Beta/ComboFix.exe
Note:
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

Close any open browsers.
Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running.
That may cause the program to freeze/hang.

Also post a new Hijackthis log please.

Firstly, thankyou very much for your swift reply!

I have tried to follow the instructions you gave as closely as possible. Unfortunately, as stated in my original post, I cannot use the non-beta version of HJT, as when I press the 'save log' button, the program simply closes, rendering it pretty much useless.

I have uninstalled the AVG antivirus software. I have kept both McAffee and Avast, for the reason that McAffee only operates when I am in my University network, and is required to be installed, and I must use another antivirus whilst at home. The former situation applies now.

I have run both Vundo and combofix. Their reports are given below. I also include the report given by the HJT beta - I thought it would be better than none at all - I could give the report from the 1.99 version as a screenshot if required, but thought that wouldn't be appreciated!

* Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
* Choose the "Scan tab" and UNcheck "Heuristic analysis"
* Back at the main window, click "Select drives" (a red dot will show which drives have been chosen)
* Then click the "Start/Stop Scanning" button (green arrow on the right) and the scan will start.
* When done, a message will be displayed at the bottom advising if any viruses were found.
* Click "Yes to all" if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
* When the scan has finished, look if you can see the icon next to the files found. If so, click it, then click the next icon right below and select "Move incurable".

Hi Richie

Thanks very much for your help. Finally done all that - the scan took a rather long time to carry out!

TBonbin was not present in either add/remove programs or in Program files folder.

Ran Dr. Web, log is below:

Computer seems to running well now - have browsed a few internet sites and had no popups to speak of, and no more instances of winxxx.tmp files being detected by on access scan. Is rather slow on bootup, but probably to be expected considering my changes to startup options in msconfig.

Thanks

Done!

When performing the disk cleanup there was no window asking 'are you sure you want to perform these actions?' - after clicking yes to 'are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point' the prompt disappeared and I was just left with the disk cleanup window, which seemed inactive.

One quick question - is it advisable to go back and alter msconfig settings for unwanted startup applications now?

Thankyou very much for your time and assistance - it is greatly appreciated - a fantastic service all round.

Best wishes
