I believe it started with a BraveSentry infection. I properly removed it, but I noticed my internet performing very slow afterwards. I saw that svchost.exe was ping'ing and querying a specific IP address. After some scanning, I found a new mal/adware infection and got rid of that too. Everything is good for about 2 days, then this afternoon, my internet again performs very slow. Using Ethereal + ZoneAlarm I see svchost.exe pinging and name querying 2 IP's now. This time, there is no infection to be found. I decide to manually block these 2 IP's, just so I can get on the internet and research this problem. Unforntunatley, svchost now constantly spams to my local router looking for these IP's....and between the querys and broadcast pings, my internet is still useless.

I've run a HijackThis and 'tasklist /svc', if that will shed any light onto this.

The only other information I can provide are the 2 website its trying to access...perhaps they are known or familiar.

RP-BILL.com
(excuse profanity) analhardvideo.com

Both are based in Russia, and both show up on a google search.

Anyway, the one thing Im really looking for is a way to determine what is telling svchost to do this. Im sure I can find a way to clean my system, but I dont know a method of discovering what this infection actually is.

Any help, advice, or links would be greatly appreciated.

  • Some of out experts would like to examine the files you are infected with
  • Go to the upload page here
  • Click Browse
  • Find this file:
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\activedsh.exe
  • Select the file, then click Open
  • Click Send File
You do not appear to be running a realtime antivirus, this is leaving you open to infection
Please install one of the following free antivirus programs:Copy/paste the following quote box into a new notepad (not wordpad) document. Make sure that wordwrap is turned off.

sc stop COMSysAppEventlog
sc delete COMSysAppEventlog

Save it to your Desktop as cleanup.bat. Save it as:
File Type: All Files (not as a text document or it wont work).
Name: cleanup.bat

Locate cleanup.bat on your Desktop and double-click it. A DOS window will open briefly and then close, this is normal

Restart

Use windows explorer to find and delete this file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\activedsh.exe

Post back with a new HijackThis log and let me know if you installed winpcap

I have installed Kaspersky and AVG, both have run full scans.

I uploaded activedsh.exe. Then completed the task of running cleanup.bat, restarting, then deleting activedsh.exe.

Here is an updated hijackthis log

I do not have WinPcap installed, I normally use Ethereal if I need to moniter something...however, I will install it today if it helps with this problem.

Thanks for continued help.

You already have winpcap installed - a lot of malware seems to like installing it

Go to Start> Control Panel> Add or Remove Programs.

Remove the following programs, if they are present.
winpcap
Restart and post a new HijackThis log

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 .
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.
Post a new HijackThis log and let me know how its running now
