My computer is infected with a series of trojans that cause Internet Explorer/Firefox to open new windows/tabs. I've been virus-free for years, and this is the first time I haven't been able to figure out how to fix it.

What I've got:
Windows XP Home Edition
Norton Antivirus 2006 (downloaded latest definitions)
Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition
Spy Sweeper 5.3 (downloaded latest definitions)

At one point, Norton was detecting both vundo and duntek trojans after restart. After removing them, it would recommend restarting again, but they'd come back with new .dll filenames.

I disabled file sharing, & auto restore, and tried the instructions at Norton's website for manually removing these trojans after making a backup of my registry. Didn't work. I also tried running FixVundo.exe, VundoFix.exe, ComboFix.exe, but none worked. I've also tried manually deleting any files created in the last month in my Temporary Internet Files folder, and disconnecting from the internet during cleaning attempts. Still getting pop-ups for recording TV on the internet, and fake antivirus ads.

Ever since getting Spy Sweeper, I'm seeing messages for other trojans as well, but all troubles seem to arise when I'm browsing the internet. I normally use Firefox, but the pop-up windows occur both in new Firefox tabs and new IE windows. (I just got a pop-up for systemdoctor.com while typing this long-winded description. I'll cut to the chase.

I have never used Hijack This, but I did confirm that I've got the latest version. This is probably getting to be a cliche statement around here, but... If anyone can help me with this, I'd really appreciate this!! I am desperate!

Dennis

Using On-Screen Keyboard utility. KVM Switch-connected keyboard/mouse NON-FUNCTIONAL after FixVundo rebooted. Fortunately, digital pad still works.

Spy sweeper blocked 4 browser "helpers" after reboot. Going to try ComboFix next.

Here's the HijackThis logfile.

Should I rename abc.bat back to HijackThis.exe?

Well, it looks like that's done it!

I've been browsing to all of my usual haunts, and no pop-ups, no unexpected hard drive grinding.

I can't express my gratitude properly. Thanks SO MUCH. I was on the verge of either throwing the box against the wall or reformatting the hard drive and trying to find the restore DVD.

I've attached my (hopefully) last Hijack This logfile, just in case you see something odd.

Again... THANK YOU THANK YOU!

Dennis

Your log is clean
If all's ok,please do the following:

Find and delete:
VundoFix.exe
Combofix

C:\VundoFix Backups
C:\QooBox

Click on Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.
In the 'System Restore' window, click on the 'Create a Restore Point' button, then click 'Next'.
In the window that appears, enter a description\name for the Restore Point, then click on 'Create',wait, then click 'Close'.
The date and time will be created automatically.

Next click on Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Cleanup.
The 'Select Drive' box will appear, click on Ok.
The 'Disk Cleanup for [C:]' box will appear, click on the 'More Options' tab.
At the bottom in the 'System Restore' window, click on the 'Clean up...' button.
A box will pop up 'Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?',click on 'Yes'.
Click on 'Yes' at 'Are you sure you want to perform these actions?'.
Now wait until 'Disk Cleanup' finishes and the box disappears.

Read through the information found here,to help you prevent any possible future infections.
