Howdy cmbz4,

No infection showing here, but with only XP SP1 and no updates it is unusual to not see infection in logs created. As XP SP1 has not been supported by MS for quite some time, why haven't you upgraded to SP2 on this system? Not sure if duplicated Start menu listings are outright infection signs. Have you run any recent scans that identified actual infected files there? Why not post back info on all that and let's take one different look as well.

Go Here and download Silent Runners to your desktop. Run it, and post back here the log it creates. If your AV queries the script, allow it to run. It's not malicious. It will create a file named Startup Programs, and will notify when the scan is complete. Copy the log from the Startup Programs file back here.

That is quite a Silent Runners log there. I think maybe you posted the same one three or so times in one post there. If you have reinstalled your system questions of infection will not apply, though can't see how you would get the same duplicated Start menu shortcuts. These are often due to a glitch when installing an new OS upgrade.

Click on each Start menu shortcut that has a duplicate (2) - try both the original and the (2) option. If one does not open the intended shortcut item, that can be removed by right clicking it, then select Delete.

However, if both original and (2) duplicate open the same shortcut successfully, check back here with me first before making any deletions.

Hi Jintan thanks for the response. I opened several programs in the start menu, both original and ones with the (2) after it and both of them opened up the programs. Thanks cmbz4

Choose one and it's duplicate, right click each and select Properties. If all the entries there are also the same then for that duplicate you checked just then, right click the (2) entry and select Delete. Reboot, check the remaining shortcut that it works and post back an update before going after the others if you would.

Hi Jintan thanks again for the response. I chose Microsoft cd label and both the original and the one with a (2) after it had the same properties, so I deleted the one with the (2) and rebooted and the original program works. Thank you again as always cmbz4

Sounds like you have your solution there. Making sure to verify the originals and duplicates match each time, delete the duplicate to make your corrections.
