Hi, have have been infected with something - possible adware.virtumonde, but I am no expert at all. Have been trying for hours to get rid of it, but no such luck so far. I keep getting annoying windows popping up while browsing the Internet.

I have run Ad-aware and AVG. I also ran a HijackThis log and here is the result:

Hi and welcome to Bleeping Computer! My name is Sam and I will be helping you.
Unfortunately we are going to need to download a small tool that will help us locate all of the malicious files. It's not a big download.

Please download ComboFix and save it to your desktop.
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's done running it will produce a log for you. Please post that log in your next reply.

Important Note - Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
Posted Image If I have helped you in any way, please consider a donation to help me continue the fight against malware.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

Hi Sam, Thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it. I've been trying all day to get it fixed, but it's hard if you're not sure what you're doing. And I feel so stupid for clicking on something I shouldn't have and getting into this mess in the first place...

Anyway, here's the log ComboFix came up with, hope you can read something out of it:

"Henk & Michelle" - 2007-05-15 19:11:42 Service Pack 2

We're heading in the right direction.

Open Notepad, and copy everything in the code box below and paste it into a new notepad file. Change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as fixme.reg on your Desktop. Make sure there is NO blank line above "REGEDIT4"!

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer\Run]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellExecuteHooks]
"{1EB53F98-7276-43E3-A32E-DEA0935FBA88}"=-
Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. When it asks if you want to merge with the registry, click YES.

=============

ownload Rustbfix from one of these locations:
http://www.uploads.ejvindh.net/rustbfix.exe
http://uploads.ejvindh.andymanchesta.com/Rustbfix.exe
...and save it to your desktop.

Double click on rustbfix.exe to run the tool. If a Rustock.b-infection is found, you will shortly hereafter be asked to reboot the computer. The reboot will probably take quite a while, and perhaps 2 reboots will be needed. But this will happen automatically. After the reboot 2 logfiles will open (%root%\avenger.txt & %root%\rustbfix\pelog.txt). Post the content of these logfiles along with a new HijackThis log.

Hi Sam,

It looks like what we did yesterday already solved a big part of the pop-up issue. I do however now get an error message when I start up my PC:

Error loading C:\Windows\system32\tcncixdw.dll
The specified module could not be found.

Anyway, I ran the rustbfix.exe but by the looks of it no infection was found:

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of the lines listed below. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Reboot and post a new hijackthis log.
Let me know if you get any errors on startup. Are you still getting popups?

Your log is looking pretty good, but there is a file that stands out as suspicious to me.
  • Please go to Jotti's malware scan
  • Copy and paste the following file path into the "File to upload & scan" box on the top of the page:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\avp.exe

  • Click on the submit button
  • Please post the results in your next reply.

Hi Sam,

Let's see, when I copied and pasted it into the box it came up with this:
The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file

But when I chose the Browse option and looked the file up that way, I got the following result:

File: avp.exe~

Now that we confirmed that it's up to no good, let's get rid of it.

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to the line listed below. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [avp] C:\WINDOWS\system32\avp.exe

Run Hijackthis and click on the Open Misc Tools section.
  • Go to Delete a file on Reboot
  • Select this file:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\avp.exe

  • Click Open and Yes to confirm.
  • Reboot your computer.

Post one more hijackthis log and let me know of any problems that you are still having.

The pop-ups are completely gone, the only error message I get when I shut down is "dwwin.exe - DLL initialization failed", but I'm not sure if that's got something to do with this.

The good news is that your log is clean!
That error message is from Dr Watson, which is a Microsoft error reporting tool. We can disable it completely, but first I would recommend cleaning up your registry. That may do the trick.
  • Please dowload: RegSeeker.
  • Click on "Clean The Registry" in the left panel.
  • Check all boxes (make sure the backup box in the lower left corner is selected!).
  • After it runs, click "Select All" on the bottom, then right-click on any selected item in the window and select "Delete Selected Items".
  • Click "Quit RegSeeker".
Now, open any of your installed programs, and make sure that everything opens ok. If so, reboot, then go back and run the RegSeeker again, do the same thing again if anything is found. When RegSeeker finds nothing else, then it's clean!

Let me know if that takes care of the error for you. Otherwise we can just disable Dr. Watson.

Hi Sam,

Okay, let's see, I downloaded the program and ran it 3 times while rebooting my computer in between. The first time it came up with about 1000 (!) entries, 200 the second time and 20 the third time. The only two entries I can't seem to get rid of are HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software/America Online and HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software/MusicMatch, Inc.

But it felt really good deleting all that other apparently unneccesary stuff. And I've got no more error messages - yay! Does that mean I'm clean again now? *(fingers crossed!)

Hi Sam, me again

I just ran the AVG spyware to see what that would bring up and it came up with the following report. The first entry kind of concerns me. Is that something I need to worry about?

Thanks for your help,

Michelle

That is part of the infection that Combofix quarantined for us. It's quarantined, but let's get rid of it for good.
Delete this file.

Otherwise everything else in your log is just cookies, so you appear to be good to go! :flowers:

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
