I had teh Crasos.exe Trojan last week. I used a thread on here and think I successfuly removed it. But either the trojan or me changed something in my system. Don't know if it's in the registry or what.

I can open a IE window but if I click a link I get the "Cannot find server or DNS Error"
When I try to open Outlook Express i get the "The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop-server.nc.rr.com', Server: 'pop-server.nc.rr.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E"

Here is my HijackThis log, also the program Comoda is a firewall I have been trying to uninstall to no avail.

If you still need help please post a fresh HijackThis log and I'll be happy to look at it for you.

Let me know as well if your complaints are still the same.

Thank you so much and yes I am still having major issues. It started with the crasos.exe malware and that seems to have been taken care of but now I get the IE and Outlook Express issues after that was removed. If I try to click a link or change web address I get the IE error.

Hi jsjustus,

Welcome to BleepingComputer Forums and thanks again for your patience.

1.

I had teh Crasos.exe Trojan last week. I used a thread on here and think I successfuly removed it. But either the trojan or me changed something in my system.

I don't think crasos.exe is responsible for the problems you describe.

2. I can see that you disabled some items in your Startup through Msconfig. We need to see them because sometimes they can be malware.

Click Start > Run > type: msconfig > OK.
Select Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services.
Click OK. And when asked to restart, click No.

3. Download Deckard's System Scanner and save it to your Desktop.

* Double click dss.exe and follow the prompts.
* When finished, it will produce a log for you.
* Post the contents of that log in your next reply.
* Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), navigate to the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder. You will find two logs in the folder, main.txt and extra.txt.
* Open the main.txt log in Notepad
* Also Copy and Paste its contents in a reply.

Please post the DSS report together with a fresh HijackTHis log.

Hi jsjustus,

here are the log's, and thank you so much.

You're very welcome.

1. First we need to disable AVG Anti-Spyware real-time protection:

* Launch AVG Anti-Spyware.
* From the "Status" menu, select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Shield' and 'Automatic Updates'.
* Then right click on AVG Anti-Spyware in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".
* Next, go to Start > Run and type: services.msc
* Press "OK".
* Click the "Extended tab" and scroll down the list to find AVG Anti-Spyware guard.
* When you find the guard service, double-click on it.
* In the Properties Window > General Tab that opens, click the "Stop" button.
* From the drop-down menu next to "Startup Type", click on "Manual".
* Now click "Apply", then "OK" and close the Services window.

2. In the attachment you see a fixj.reg; click it to dfownload it and run it.

3. Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel and double-click on Add or Remove Programs. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following program:

Viewpoint Media Player

Also, you are running LimeWire. Multiple versions of LimeWire include spyware. I highly recommend uninstalling it and replacing it with a clean P2P program. You can find a list of clean P2P programs here!

If you agree uninstall the following program as well:

LimeWire

4. Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. Do not run it yet.

5. Make sure you can view all files. Click Start >My Computer > Tools > Folder Options >View. Check "Show hidden files and folders", uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types". Click "Apply to all folders" >Apply then OK.

6. Reboot and as the computer starts up, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times and then choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear.

7. Then, using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), delete the folder:

C:\Program Files\LimeWire

and file in bold:

C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\crasos.exe

8. Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

9. Reboot to go back into Normal mode.

10. Please run the F-Secure Online Scanner
Note: This Scanner is for Internet Explorer Only!
Follow the Instruction here for installation.
Accept the License Agreement.
Once the ActiveX installs,Click Full System Scan
Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
The scan will take some time to finish, so please be patient.
When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Please post the F-Secure report together with a fresh HijackThis log.

I could not do the F-Secure scan because it is web based and my connection keeps dropping, after @ 10 minutes, just like when I try to open a new link( I had to copy the properties of all the links you provided for download and paste them into a new window because I get the DNS error when I try to open it)

Limewire was uninstalled a couple months ago and I can't find the crasos.exe file except in the DSS main.txt file.

Now my connection is dropping more frequently and I have to restart to get another IE to open connection.

Would a System restore work in this case? Anything I need to save is long saved on backup. Didn't know if a system restore would reset all my settings correctly.

Here is the newest Hijack This log

Hi jsjustus,

1. You disabled some items again in your Startup through Msconfig. We need to see them because sometimes they can be malware.

Click Start > Run > type: msconfig > OK.
Select Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services.
Click OK. And when asked to restart, click No.

2.

I could not do the F-Secure scan because it is web based and my connection keeps dropping, after @ 10 minutes, just like when I try to open a new link( I had to copy the properties of all the links you provided for download and paste them into a new window because I get the DNS error when I try to open it)
Would a System restore work in this case? Anything I need to save is long saved on backup. Didn't know if a system restore would reset all my settings correctly.

Yes you could do system restore but you might restore to a point where you were already infected, meaning that you are going to restore the infection as well.
I recommend to follow step 1 and then read the info at support.microsoft.com.

If you have any doubts about what to do don't do anything and post back here for further instructions.

3. You already have AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 on your computer. Launch it and click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"), Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5. Do not run it yet.

4. Reboot and as the computer starts up, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times and then choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear.

5. Run AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 and click on the Scanner tab at the top
  • Click the "Settings" tab and then change the recommended action to Quarantine and ensure that Automatically generate report after every scan is selected and uncheck "Only if Threats are found"
  • Click back to the "Scan" tab and then click on Complete System Scan.
This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.
  • AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
  • Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).
Please reboot and post the AVG report together with a fresh HijackThis log.

Thanks again for helping me. This has become crippling.

As far as the system restore I can go back 6-8 months and should be fine if it comes to that. Really only had trouble in the last few weeks. I had Sygate Firewall and the malware somehow messed with that and I would get an error everytime it opened ad thats when the trouble started.

The AVG scan concluded "Nothing Found". I did a full startup and here is the Hijack This log with everything running.

Hi jsjustus,

As far as the system restore I can go back 6-8 months and should be fine if it comes to that. Really only had trouble in the last few weeks.

I think it's better to try and find out what's going on; the restore can be done later.

1. First we need to disable AVG Anti-Spyware real-time protection:

* Launch AVG Anti-Spyware.
* From the "Status" menu, select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Shield' and 'Automatic Updates'.
* Then right click on AVG Anti-Spyware in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".
* Next, go to Start > Run and type: services.msc
* Press "OK".

2. Run HijackThis, click Scan and checkmark the following entries:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [zgcgk451z70] C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\crasos.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [js2d6] C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\crasos.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ewh6] C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\crasos.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [4syu5y8v] C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\crasos.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [1ski6r] C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\crasos.exe
O4 - Startup: LimeWire On Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\LimeWire\LimeWire.exe

Close all browsers and windows, except for HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button; close HijackThis!

3. Make sure you can view all files. Click Start >My Computer > Tools > Folder Options >View. Check "Show hidden files and folders", uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types". Click "Apply to all folders" >Apply then OK.

4. Reboot and as the computer starts up, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times and then choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear.

5. Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete the following folder in bold if it exists:

C:\Program Files\LimeWire

... and file in bold:

C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\crasos.exe<<You'll find the file in: DOCUMEnt and settings\Owner\LOCALSettings\Temp\

6. Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:

* Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
* Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
* Click the "Delete Cookies" button
* Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
* When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK

Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):

* Go to Tools > Options.
* Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
* Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
* Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.

Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin

* Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
* Let it scan your system for files to remove.
* Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
* Press OK to remove them.

7. Okay let's concentrate on the error you get.

Go to Start > Run and type sfc /scannow (note the space after sfc)

Press enter.

System file checker will scan your computer for corrupt or missing files. Follow the prompts, and insert your Windows installation CD if requested. Then please restart your computer.

Please post a fresh HijackThis log and let me know if this helped.

Everything went OK except when I did the System file checker it basically just flickered on the screen for a second then went off. Maybe that is a good sign but seemed like the scan went fast.

**UPDATE** When I was back in normal mode, not safe mode, I tried the system file checker again and it ran. Went about 20 minutes and completed with no prompts on errors.

Here is the latest HijackThis log and I still get the same errors in IE and Outlook.

Falu,

I think I solved the mystery. If you look in the logs there is a Comodo file, cmdagent.exe, which is a firewall that I tried after my Sygate firewall crashed. The Sygate crash, installing Comodo and the Malware all occured about the same time. I uninstalled Comodo but for some reason that file stayed behind and I never could get it deleted, couldn't even stop it in service.msc folder.

So on a whim I went to safe mode and was able to delete the file there and rebooted back and now everything seems to work fine again. My IE is able to open more windows and Outlook is recogonizing my ports and I am able to send and receive mail. So something in that firewall was preventing the connections and causing the errors.

Thanks so much for all your help and now I have more tools to use to ward off thngs in the future. I do have one question and I have done it before but forgot how. I usually do selective startup and was wonderign how I delete all the file sin selective startup that the programs have long been deleted.

Again thanks so much for sticking with me though this.

Hi jsjustus,

1.

That's good news. But please be sure to have a firewall installed and running.

Check those two and see how they work for you:

Kerio
Zone alarm

For a tutorial on Firewalls click: Understanding and Using Firewalls!

2.

I do have one question and I have done it before but forgot how. I usually do selective startup and was wonderign how I delete all the file sin selective startup that the programs have long been deleted.

Click Start > Run and type msconfig in the text box and there you are.

3. I would prefer to see another HijackThis log to be sure it's clean now and it does show all it should. After that I will instruct some last things to do and refer you to some extra tools and information.
