Hello and welcome to BleepingComputer. I hope you enjoy your stay here!

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
  • Prepare CWShredder for use:
    • Download CWShredder.
    • Save CWShredder.exe to a convenient location.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
  • Prepare AboutBuster for use:
    • Download AboutBuster.
    • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
    • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
    • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
    • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update".
    • You should not run the program yet so click "Exit".
  • Prepare cwsserviceremove.reg for use:
    • Download cwsserviceremove.zip.
    • Unzip the contents of cwsserviceremove.zip (cwsserviceremove.reg) to your desktop.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
Click Start. Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.
  • Run CWShredder:
    • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
    • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
    • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
    • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
  • Remove the offending service:
    • Double-click on cwsserviceremove.reg you downloaded earlier.
    • When it asks you to merge the information to the registry click "Yes".
  • Run AboutBuster and save the logs:
    • Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click OK at the directions prompt.
    • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
    • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
    • It will begin to your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
    • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I need a copy of it.
  • Clean out temporary files:
    • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
    • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
    • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
    • Click "OK" to remove them.
    • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
  • Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.
  • Free TrendMicro Housecall scan:
    • Vist the TrendMicro Housecall website.
    • Select your country from the drop-down list and click "Go".
    • Choose "Yes" at the ActiveX Security Warning prompt.
    • Please wait while the Housecall engine is updated.
    • Select the drives to be scanned by placing a check in their respective boxes.
    • Check the "Auto Clean" box.
    • Click "SCAN" in order to begin scanning your system.
    • Please be patient while Housecall scans your system for malicious files.
    • If not auto-cleaned, remove anything it finds.
    • Click "Close" to exit the Housecall scanner.
    • Choose "Yes" at the HouseCall message prompt.
  • Prepare your reply:
    • Please post a fresh HijackThis log
    • Please post the AboutBuster log.
    • Please note any complications you had.

Sorry to add this post again, but I just realized that I should add this to my orignal post so that all the information and correspondences are in one place. Please disregard my post of 6:22pm and instead read this one.

I did everything recommended by HJT log team in attempt to detect my About;Blank Trojan horse problem. I allowed the show hidden files, etc....and ran cwshredder, and aboutbuster in safe mode, then cleaned out temp & recycle. I was unable to run a TrendMicro Housecall scan since I am no longer using IE (using Foxfire now, sick of all the problems with IE). Anyway, here's my Aboutbuster log and HJT log.

Any thoughts on what to do with the dozens of trojan horse downloader and backdoor virus in my AVG vault that are not healable? Delete them?

Thanks for the help. I am obviously in need!

Can you please run through the same steps again, restart, and then post a new HijackThis log? Please also run TrendMicro. I know you hate it but once your log is clean we won't have to use it again.

Okay, I will have to go download IE 6.0 so it might take a couple hours to do everything, but I will and then post a new HJT. Thanks for the help.

Dear HTJ log team member:

I attempted to redo all the steps as you suggested, but have been unable to do the TrendMicro scan. Everytime I try, I get an error reading from IE "IE encountered a problem and needs to close." I read further and it says that I'm "missing critical updates that improve stability and security of computer." Not sure why, I have all updates except service pack 2 which I will not put on my machine (caused major crash a few months ago). Anyway, any suggestions on circumventing the error reading and subsequent shutdown of IE? Or perhaps another scan instead of TrendMicro?

Thanks for the HELP. Also, any thoughts on what to do with the 100 or so .exe files in Windows & System32 that are in my AVG vault. Is it okay to delet them?

Here's the latest HJT log (but not sure if this is helpful without the TrendMicro scan)

It should be OK to delete the files in the AVG vault if they cannot be healed.

Your HijackThis log also shows that you only upgraded Internet Exporer to SP1. Go to Start Menu > Windows Updates to install all of them. You don't have to install SP2 if you don't want to but for sure install everything else.

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.

Place a checkmark next to these entries, close all browsers and windows, and have HijackThis fix them by clicking Fix Checked:

Please delete these folders using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\Documents and Settings\Lugosh\Local Settings\Temp
C:\Program Files\Admanager Controller

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\trmbx.dll

Now you can restart the computer normally.
Please run HijackThis again and post a fresh log, just so I can make sure that all the malware was deleted according to plan.

I was able to do everything suggested in the last post EXCEPT delete the following folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\Lugosh\Local Settings\Temp

I kept getting the following: "Cannot delete GAMECE~1: Cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path and file name."

Here's the latest HJT log, Thanks :

Okay, I fixed the four items, restarted and ran another HJT log. As I mentioned in my last post, I wasn't able to delete the Temp folder. Is that going to be a problem? Thanks for your continued help! It is greatly appreciated!

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf

Right-click and save the file as DelDomains.inf with Save As Type All Files. Then right-click on it and choose Install.

Finally, restart your computer and post a new HijackThis log.

It looks clean now. Great job!

So I'm assuming you are not having anymore problems?

I'm not sure if I'm totally clean or not. I haven't had any issues with About:Blank at all. However, I ran an Ad-aware scan last night out of curiosity and during the scan I got about 10 AVG popups for various trojan horses. I ran an AVG scan and found more trojan horses. I'll add another post if I have anymore issues. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'm clean!

Thanks so much for your help! As I said before, you guys are great!
I definitely couldn't have done this without you!

If you could please tell me where AVG finds those trojans and then name of them, I would be able to help you more.
