Posted 09 May 2007 - 11:17 PM

about two weeks ago my antivirus said something about a chisyne virus. since then my computer has been acting fairly normal except for a few changes that realy bug me (on the welcome screen when i do the windows+L the box for my password auto-pops up instead of me having to click on it.) there are also about 4-5 more processes runing in task manager than there used to be on average. is there anything in my log that can fix this?

thanks,
~Ethan

Hi kdude22,
welcome to BleepingComputer. My name is Rosty and I'm going to help you with your log.

I'm afraid that I have some bad news concerning your computer - you have become infected with W32/Kelvir-AX!
Here is a quick description of this infection:

W32/Kelvir-AX is an Instant Messenging worm and a backdoor Trojan for the Windows platform.

W32/Kelvir-AX runs continuously in the background, providing a backdoor server which allows a remote intruder to gain access and control over the computer via IRC channels. The worm contains functionality to download, install and run new software.

W32/Kelvir-AX includes functionality to:

- steal confidential information
- carry out DDoS flooder attacks
- silently download, install and run new software
- disable other software, including anti-virus, firewall and security related applications
- modify the HOSTS file

and some side effects:

* Turns off anti-virus applications
* Allows others to access the computer
* Modifies data on the computer
* Steals information
* Downloads code from the internet
* Reduces system security

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the rootkit has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your computer and would like me to attempt to clean it, I will be happy to do so.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

Regards,

Rosty.

Thanks for your help Rosty,

I would like to attempt to clean my computer first.
if that doesnt work, then a reinstall would be fine with me.
my computer has norton ghost on it, so if i just ran that and put my factory image back on my harddisk, would that work or has that become infected too?

if i had an external hard drive and were to just put certain files i want to keep such as music and tv shows would they infect my system when i put them back after the reinstall?

Does this just happen over IRC? i do not even use IRC however i do have Trillian installed, a program that supports IRC but i have never even used the IRC function

thanks again,
Kdude22

Hi kdude22,

I would like to attempt to clean my computer first.

No problem, we'll give it a try.

my computer has norton ghost on it, so if i just ran that and put my factory image back on my harddisk, would that work or has that become infected too?

That should become infected too.

* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Do not use it yet!

Next, please open HijackThis, click do a scan only and place a check next to the following entries:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = www.google.com/ig/dell?hl=en&client=dell-usuk-rel&channel=us&ibd=4070116
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = <a href="http://hs.facebook.com/home.php" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://hs.facebook.com/home.php</a>?
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,Default_Page_URL = www.google.com/ig/dell?hl=en&client=dell-usuk-rel&channel=us&ibd=4070116
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Updates] svshost.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Video Driver] svbhost.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Updates] svshost.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Video Driver] svbhost.exe

Close all other windows and browsers, except HijackThis, and click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis.

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\svshost.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\svehost.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\svbhost.exe

  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
  • Choose the "Scan"-tab, remove the mark at "Heuristic analysis".
  • Back at the main window, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: Posted Image
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    Posted Image
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web, you saved previously, the results from virustotal and a new HijackThis log in your next reply.
Regards,

Rosty.

there were several items you listed that i needed to clean that did not show up.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Updates] svshost.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Updates] svshost.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svshost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svehost.exe

i was also unable to complete this step:

"When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image"

this option was not made avaliable after the scan, perhaps since all the items were deleted.

what is the next step?

Hi kdude22,

open HijackThis and click do a scan only and place a check next to the following entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Updates] svehost.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Updates] svehost.exe

Close all other windows and browsers, except HijackThis, and click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis.

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svehost.exe

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Hi kdude22, and thanks for posting the logs I asked for.

Your log looks clean.
How are things running?
Please let me know.

Regards,

Rosty.

i havent noticed anything different, however when i do the windows key + L shortcut, it still automatically pops up the box to enter my password (on the welcom screen). it isnt overly important, but it is jsut annoying.

so is ther a way to tell if my computer is still vulnerable to the back door trojan?

Like I said before:

your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted.

For the box to enter your password: did you checked your settings ?

* Download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished and after reboot (in case it asks to reboot), it should open a log, combofix.txt.
Post the following logs in your next reply:

* Combofix log (C:\Combofix.txt)
*HijackThis log

Hi kdude22,

when you asked if i have checked my settings, which settings where you referring to?

I meant your login settings.

Your log looks clean.
How are things running?
Please let me know.

Regards,

Rosty.

everything seems that same as it has been, i havent noticed any changes.
and i looked and couldnt find any settings that would say to automatically show the password enrty text box on the welcome screen

if i format my hard drive will that remove the separate partition containing my infected backup image? also, once i reinstall, is there a way to create a new backup image?

Hi kdude22,

if you go to your configuration window and you click on "useraccounts" do you see "change an account"?
If so, please click on it and choose "the account you want to change". Take alook at "create an password" and change it if needed.

if i format my hard drive will that remove the separate partition containing my infected backup image?

Yes, it does.

also, once i reinstall, is there a way to create a new backup image?

Yes there is. You can do it on the same like before.

i changed my password but it still automatically pops up the box for my password on the welcome screen

when i bought my leptop from dell, it came with the image already on there, i believe on a separate partition. how do i make a new image once i format the drive? will this remove the partition so i would have to repartition it?
