Hello! This is my first post here. I appreciate any attempts to help. I seem to have picked up a pair of nasty infections in my computer and have not been able to delete them with the usual spyware or virus programs. Below I will outline the names, locations and symptoms of these problems.

The Infections and Locations

1. backdoor.hupigon.gen

file location- c:\windows\system32.dll

2. trojan.downloader.ruins

file location- c:\windows\system32\kdjkl.exe

registry value- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MicrosoftWindows\WindowsNT\Current Version\Winlogon, System

startup program- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MicrosoftWindows\WindowsNT\Current Version\Winlogon c:\windows\system32\kdjkl.exe

Please note: I am basing these infection names and locations on the information provided by Spyware Doctor 5, the free version, which identifies but does not delete infections.

The Symptoms

1. Programs seem to close arbitrarily. Windows is the most common. The system doesn't shut down it just freezes, the "program is not responding" box pops up and I have to start over on whatever I was doing.

2. Slow start-up and shut down.

3. Overall slow operation of everything.

4. Norton anti-virus has an error on "script blocking."

5. Occasional noises coming from computer of which there were none before.

Currently Loaded Spyware and Anti-Virus Programs

1. Ad-aware

2. Spybot Search and Destroy

3. Norton Anti-virus

4. Spyware Blaster

5. PC Tools Spyware Doctor 5, trial version

6. Trojan Hunter, trial version

7. Trojan Guarder, trial version

8. jv16Power Tools, trial version

9. PC Tools Anti-virus

10. AVG-Anti Spyware

11. Hijack This

Numbers 5-11 have been installed after this problem first occurred. The problem was first identified by Norton which was unable to delete the infections. I have considered that some of the slowdown may be from the sudden addition of all the spyware and virus programs.

Hijack This Log

I don't know if this is absolutely necessary but from scanning other posts, it seems the request is inevitably made. Here it is:

Welcome to the BleepingComputer HijackThis Logs and Analysis forum Ajarn

Please download DrWeb-CureIt & save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.

You should copy/print the following because you need to be in Safe Mode from here on.

Reboot your computer into SAFE MODE" using the F8 method.
To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly.
A menu will appear with several options.
Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with DrWeb-CureIt as follows:
* Double-click on drweb-cureit.exe to start the program. An "Express Scan of your PC" notice will appear.
* Under "Start the Express Scan Now", Click "OK" to start. This is a short scan that will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the Yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it.
* Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
* Choose the "Scan tab" and UNcheck "Heuristic analysis"
* Back at the main window, click "Select drives" (a red dot will show which drives have been chosen)
* Then click the "Start/Stop Scanning" button (green arrow on the right) and the scan will start.
* When done, a message will be displayed at the bottom advising if any viruses were found.
* Click "Yes to all" if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
* When the scan has finished, look if you can see the icon next to the files found. If so, click it, then click the next icon right below and select "Move incurable".
(This will move it to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if it can't be cured)
* Next, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list.
* Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
* Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
* Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
* After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)

******************************

Please download Combofix and save to your desktop:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/Beta/ComboFix.exe
Note:
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

Close any open browsers.
Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running.
That may cause the program to freeze/hang.

Also post a new Hijackthis log please.

Thank you very much for your help so far. I have followed all your instructions. I believe some of the infections were eliminated but not all. When I ran Dr. Web-cureit, there were a few trojans that did not indicate any action having been taken. I tried to click on them and then click the icons to take action but nothing happened. Hopefully this will show up in the log.

Things already seem a bit faster though there are still some bleating sounds.

Spyware doctor indicates trojan.downloader.ruins are still there and something called trojan.PWS.tanspy, though perhaps that is another name for the hupigon.gen as the same location is listed. Also, there was a Spyware doctor popup box indicating it had blocked a malicious action by the hupigon.gen for whatever that's worth.

Again, thank you for your assistance.

Please download Sophos Anti-Rootkit,and save it on your desktop.
1. Double-click sarsfx.exe to extract the files and leave the default settings.
2. Open the folder C:\SOPHTEMP and double-click sargui.exe to start the program.
3. Make sure the following are checked:
- Running processes
- Windows Registry
- Local Hard Drives
4. Click the "Start Scan" button.
5. Click the "OK" button after you get the notification that the scan has finished and close the program.
6. Click on Start>Run and type, or copy and paste: %temp%\sarscan.log then press Enter.
7. This should open the log from the rootkit scan.
Post this log into your next reply.

Note:
If the scan is performed while the computer is in use, false positives may appear in the scan results.
This is caused by files or registry entries being deleted, including temporary files being deleted automatically.
It has also been reported that Trojan Hunter is detecting Sophos Anti-rootkit as Trojan.Dropper.Interlac.100
So if you have Trojan Hunter installed you will need to disable it prior to running a scan.

RichieUK,

It does seem to be running a bit smoother now. There still is the occasional "program not responding," (for example in the latest attempt to run Hijack This) but not the same frequency as before.

Spyware Doctor still lists the trojan.hupigon.gen, the trojan. PWS.tanspy but now only one instance of the trojan.downloader.ruins. Not sure how accurate that is.

There is still some bleating.

Here are the relevant logs:

Please run the F-Secure online virus/spyware scan using Internet Explorer:
http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml
Follow the directions in the F-Secure page for proper Installation.
Accept the License Agreement.
Once the ActiveX installs,Click ‘Custom Scan’ and be sure the following are checked:
1.Scan whole System
2.Scan all files
3.Scan whole system for rootkits
4.Scan whole system for spyware
5.Scan inside archives
6.Use advanced heuristics
Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
The scan will take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan completes, click the ‘I want to decide item by item’ button.
For each item found,Select ‘Disinfect’ and click ‘Next’.
Click the ‘Show Report’ button, then copy and paste the entire report into your next reply.
Also post a new Hijackthis log please.

RichieUK,

I followed your instructions. However, while in the cleaning stage (after checking all with disinfect) a Norton anti-virus box popped up indicating "Trojan". Then a box related to the F-Secure indicated it had encountered an error and had to close.

Shall I try running it again?

At the very least, here is the latest Hijack This log.

I won't be able to check back in for 4 or 5 hours.

Cheers.

I ran the F-secure scan again. Again it made it to the cleaning stage but stopped when there was an error. The error box said:

"Please close the scanner and your browser, then try your scan again (Id:10)"

It was stopped at: trojandropper.win32.agent.bev

Download\unzip to your desktop AVG Anti-Rootkit Free:
http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/setup...up-1.1.0.42.exe
Launch AVG,click on the 'Search for Rootkits' tab.
Then click on 'Perform in-depth search'.
When the scan has finished click on 'Save result to file'.
Copy and paste those results into your next reply.

RichieUK,

I ran the AVG-Anti-Rootkit but could not see any option for "save result to file." Is it also possible to do that through Start>Run?

I am running the anti-rootkit scan again. Perhaps I will be able to save the file this time.

Cheers.

Remove both the following entries with AVG Anti Rootkit if present:
C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\KDJKL.EXE-04F73065.pf
C:\WINDOWS\system32\kdjkl.exe

Let me know how it goes.

RichieUK,

I've been at it since my last post. Had some serious problems; had to shut down a few times, removed and re-installed AVG-anti-rootkit as there were some problems running it. Now I have re-installed it and done another scan. No, those entries (C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\KDJKL.EXE-04F73065.pf
C:\WINDOWS\system32\kdjkl.exe) are not present.

I thought those were removed with sarsfx?

Here are a few of the first entries (there are 76 in total):

C:\WINDOWS\SNOWNOIT.EXE Hidden Application File

c:\WINDOWS\services.dll Hidden File

c:\WINDOWS\system32.dll Hidden File

c:\Windows\snownoit.exe Hidden File

There are numerous \windows\servicepackfiles\i386\...

I would be willing to type them all out if necessary.

Cheers.

Download Winpfind V2.0.2 and extract the contents to your desktop:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/winpfind.exe
Open the WinPFind folder and double click on Winpfind.exe
Leave the configuation settings as they are and click on 'Run Scan'.
The scan will take some time to complete so please be patient.
Once complete close the program.
Open the WinPFind folder, then copy and paste the entire content of winpfind.txt into your next reply.
*NOTE*
It may take more than one reply to post the whole winpfind.txt.
