Hello,

Please download FixwareOut from one of the following sites:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. If your firewall gives an alert, (because this tool will download an additional file from the internet), please don't let your firewall block it, but allow it instead.
Then you will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads please post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log.

Note: ONLY if you have connection problems after performing above steps - go to Start -> Control Panel, and choose Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and left click on properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio button that says Obtain DNS servers automatically. Click OK twice, and restart your computer.

Quick test and I don't seem to be being redirected, but the first click on a search result still takes about 10 secconds to hit. Other than that I seem to be OK - will test further throughout the day and let you know.

Thanks again - what a brilliant place!!!!

Hello,

Glad to hear redirections are gone. The slow search results may be because of Norton - this is known.

Remove next file:

C:\WINDOWS\Temp\kdibk.ren

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} - http://software-dl.real.com/17e37e1ca7ebf1...ip/RdxIE601.cab
O18 - Filter: text/html - (no CLSID) - (no file)

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
By the way, when your computer starts up, does your C:\Windows\system32 folder open? Because I see an entry in your log (which is legit btw), which may cause this.
Let me know in your next reply.

Hi there,

Many thanks again! I have completed the steps below and updated my Java as suggested. You are right about Windows/system32 opening when I boot the computer - I have worked out that it is something to do with Norton, but have never been able to fix it.

Thanks again for the brilliant help - I'm very impressed

EDIT - btw a file called fwtemp.jpg appeard on my desktop, no idea how it got there - it is a file i was editing earlier today, one of my photos....

Attached File  fwtemp.jpg   49.86KB   4 downloads

Hi,

I have worked out that it is something to do with Norton, but have never been able to fix it.

No, it hasn't anything to do with Norton, but with this entry in HijackThis which is related with your Creative Audigy2 Sound Card:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SB Audigy 2 Startup Menu] /L:ENG

A folder opening at Windows startup is because there is a registry value set in your startup entries which is "invalid"
And that's the case here.

So check and fix above entry in Hijackthis.

In case Hijackthis wasn't able to delete that entry (happens quite a lot with that one), do next:

Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox below in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"SB Audigy 2 Startup Menu"=-

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.
(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here with screenshots.)

Let me know if that solved your problem.

Edit - I see you edited your post with next:

EDIT - btw a file called fwtemp.jpg appeard on my desktop, no idea how it got there - it is a file i was editing earlier today, one of my photos....

I don't know either how it ended up there, but it's noting to worry about

Thanks for your help - that's brilliant - no more system32 folder on startup! No more hijacked search results.

Thanks so much
