Ran House Call -
Did not remove: Trojan_Agent.prx, Spyw_juansear.F
Removed: Trojan_BHO.cm, Trojan_Vundo.ye, Trojan_Klone.bx, Hackingtools_cain

Ran Spybot and Adaware - Found many things and removed, but still have popup ads.

Wanted Windows Updates for Office 2003 Products. Did most of them.

Panda software found infections, but would not remove them without paying.

Ran Bit Defender, pc ran into issues and never would run Bit Defender completely. Stinger found nothing.

I also ran F-Prot Antivirus: Quarantined files and could not remove some files and deleted one. I have it as a screenshot placed in a Word Doc, can't get it to attach to this post. I have attached the Active Scan file.

Attached File  Activescan_1___5_3_07.txt   11.5KB   11 downloads

The pc is a Gateway Tablet PC from 2005 with Win XP SP2 and Office 03.

Checking to see if someone has had a chance to look at my results. The popups have definitely disappeared, but want to ensure that everything is removed before returning this laptop. I need to get it back to it's rightful location soon.

Thanks!

* Please open hijackthis and put a check next to the following:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {45985971-3c51-480a-8c54-292c9bf0a7b6} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\atmtub.dll (file missing)

* After you check the items you want to fix, close all browsers and windows, except for HijackThis, then click on the Fix Checked button on HijackThis.

Your Java Runtime Environment is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Enviroinment (JRE) 6u1, The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save it to your desktop (13.16 MB).
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially any web browsers.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u1-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
* After that, tell me how everything is working.

Everything was great until I began cleaning out items that did not need to remain on the laptop.

I cleaned out c:\documents and settings\semroom1\local settings\temp folder. F-Prot Antivirus found and deleted tmp.tmp.exe (W32/Trojan.AFUA).

I cleaned out c:\documents and settings\semroom1\local settings\temp folder. F-Prot Antivirus found and deleted tmp.tmp.exe (W32/Trojan.AFUA).

I assume the file keeps returning?

The same file does not return to the temp folder. Only a folder under temp called "WPDNSE" and a file under temp called "jusched.log" appeared.

The popups are gone. So far so good.

Thanks

I haven't been able to get the scan from VirusTotal to complete. Yesterday it stopped after 3 scans, I left it on most of the day and then I stopped it and tried again and could not get to the server at all. I tried again today and the same problem.

The Ipopup.exe that you are seeing is a program from ITC Systems. This particular version was put out several years ago prior to the annoying popups of today. I am sure they have renamed it since. This program tells the user who clicked print to add an identifying name, word or something in the popup box which sends the info. to a print release station which they put their campus card in and the reader removes the cost of the print job and then it is released to the printer for the patron to retrieve. (We are an academic library.)

I will continue to try VirusTotal Online more today and see if I can get reconnected.

Thanks,

Madeline

Everything seems to be running smooth.

Thanks for all your help! I appreciate it so much and plan to donate to the cause.

I found this site several years ago when I was working on a pc for a friend of mine and was desparate to find the solution since I had tried everything I could think. The answer was on this website and solved in a matter of minutes. I believe I found it with google and someone had used the same affected filename in their title. Since then, I have used this site several times with a solution each time. We aren't all virus, malware and spyware experts.

I will keep trying the Virus Tool scan.

Madeline

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we at Bleepingcomputer are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers.

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are ZoneAlarm, Kerio, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. :D
