I keep getting infected with the Smitfraud virus among others. I use Ad-Aware, Spybot and Norton System Works 2006. Once removed they keep coming back. Something infected Norton and it is currently useless. I can't uninstall the program to re-install it. It keeps coming up with an error and reverses the install. I assume that once this machine is cleaned, I should be able to uninstall and re-install Norton. I downloaded Zone Alarm as an interim firewall. I also downloaded BitDefender as recommended by the HijackThis preperation guide. Below is a copy of the Hijackthis file for review. PLEASE HELP..

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

* After you check the items you want to fix, close all browsers and windows, except for HijackThis, then click on the Fix Checked button on HijackThis.

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ip6bug.dll

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

* After that, post a new hijackthis log here.

* Download OTMoveIt.exe from here and place it on your desktop:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt.exe

* Open OTMoveIt.exe.
In the left pane where it says: "Paste List of Files/Folders to be Moved", copy and paste next part:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ip6bug.dll

Then click the MoveIt button below.
In case you get a "Bad Image" error, just click OK at the promt. It will move the file anyway.
When done, it will create a log (********_******.log -- * stands for date and time) in next folder: C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles.
Copy and paste this log in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.

Here are the two logs you requested. It said the delete failed & said it needed to reboot and it would delete on reboot. I said ok to the reboot.

Mike

LoadLibrary failed for C:\WINDOWS\system32\ip6bug.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ip6bug.dll NOT unregistered.
File move failed. C:\WINDOWS\system32\ip6bug.dll scheduled to be moved on reboot.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.
  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ip6bug.dll

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
  • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
  • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
  • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
  • Click Done
  • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
  • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log by using Add/Reply

Hi Jurgenv,
Here are the logs. Something happened that a log was not created the first time I ran Avenger. This is the log that showed up the second time I tried it. The file C:Windows/System32/ip6bug.dll is gone.

Hi Jurgenv,
Things seem to be running well. I ran spybot yesterday and removed a number of Tracking cookies. I ran it again just now and it indicated no threats were present. I really appreciate the help in getting this thing cleaned-up. If you don't hear from me in the next several days you can assume all is well. I will definately make a contribution to Bleepingcomputer.com.

Thanks,

Mike

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we at Bleepingcomputer are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers.

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.
Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

4)Please make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. :D
