hello.. i am infected with a hijacker that redirects internet explorer to all sorts of sites including btcar.com and other when clicking on a google search result. for example, when doing a search for "stuff", a get results like stuff.com (stuff magazines homepage). when clicking on the search result however, i get sent to many weird, silly and stupid websites. when i do a search using opera or firefox browsers this problem doesn't happen. i did a safe mode scan with symantec anti virus, ad-aware, and spybot but that did not fix the problem. I did an online system scam with "spynomore.com" website, maybe a mistake and it found several entries which i don't know what i can do with. such as a "hidden file" kdcfy.exe, located in c:\windows\system32. also a registry entry of the same file name.

Howdy burke91,

Welcome to BleepingComputer. No infection jumping out in the log posted, but your description and the file you did find gives us a hint on some next best steps to do. Let's do them.

First, please disable SpyBot's TeaTimer, as this will interfere with repairs.

1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
5) Restart your computer.
You can re-enable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

Then your log shows you have two antivirus softwares loaded there, which will cause conflicts and slowdowns. You should choose between Norton and BitDefender8, depending on which one works for you and considerations like recent payments and registrations, then uninstall the other.

----------------------------------

Download ComboFix.exe from here to your desktop, and click the downloaded file to run the repair.

When the command window opens, select 1 (and Enter). Allow the scan to run. When completed a text window will appear - please copy/paste the contents back here. This log can also be found at C:\ComboFix.txt.

A caution - do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop.

----------------------------------

Go here and download the free version of SUPERAntiSpyware and install it. Reboot.

Open SUPERAntiSpyware and click on the check for updates button. Once the update is finished click the Scan Your Computer button. Check Perform Complete Scan and then next.

SUPERAntiSpyware will now scan your computer and when its finished it will list all the infections it has found. Make sure that they all have a check next to them and click next. If prompted allow the reboot, and after the reboot open SUPERAntiSpyware again (double click the bug-shaped Taskbar icon).

Click Preferences, then under the Statistics/Logs tab, click to select the most recent Scan Log, then click View Log. Save the log to your desktop, and copy/paste the text from the log back here.

-----------------------------------

Go Here and download Silent Runners to your desktop. Run it, and post back here the log it creates. If your AV queries the script, allow it to run. It's not malicious. It will create a file named Startup Programs, and will notify when the scan is complete. Copy the log from the Startup Programs file back here, along with the combofix.txt log, the SUPERAntiSpyware log and a new HijackThis scan please. You can use separate posts here if needed.

Something has made changes there, but I see ComboFix did remove an additional item found. I had expected SuperAntiSpyware to also come up with additional unseens, but only harmless cookies with that. Let's alter some things and check again to be sure now.

First rename HijackThis.exe to burke.exe - you can click on the renamed file to run HijackThis afterwards.

Then download VirtumundoBegone from here and save it to your desktop. When you have done this doubleclick on VirtumundoBeGone.exe and follow the instructions. When it has finished, reboot and post the log that is created on your desktop called VBG.TXT in your next reply. Do not worry if you see a BLUE SCREEN "Fatal Error" Message, it is normal and expected.

After that completes go here and run the Kaspersky online scan, and post back the log it creates (it requires IE).

To use the scan, once the download has completed click Scan Settings, then make sure the "extended option" is checked (leave all others as they are) and click OK. Then click My Computer to begin the scan. Save the Report as a text file and post that back here.

Post back that log, along with the VBG.TXT log and new HijackThis and Silents Runners logs please.

howdy again.... thank you for all the help....

OK, I ran all the scans and FYI, no blue screen of death with the virtuomundobegone scan. Also, no more redirects with google/internet explorer ---- thats the good news...
Bad news (hopefully really not so bad) is that i found out that my roomate ran something called fixwareout.exe just before i sent out my original log.... i think it corrected part of the redirection issue to btcar.com and such. also, i was online yesterday and may have picked up a new virus.....

anyway... the logs from last night....

I wonder when all the changes made by your friend occurred - Vundo shows only as a registry remnant no longer even picked up by HijackThis, and the Kaspersky log does reflect a Housecall scan having already isolated a DNSChanger infection file that would be seen with a Wareout infection.

The Kaspersky log is mostly normally locked system functions, but does show infection located in a backup email files stored in C:\Documents and Settings\kelly\My Documents\outlookbackup, and D:\kellydocs-030307\outlookbackup, so be sure to empty those folders through Outlook or empty the contents through Explorer.

I see Dantz Retrospect backup software running here. I am not familiar with it's uses, but if it has been saving backups from infected files you may consider clearing whatever storage it has and starting afresh with that.

As you are about to make registry changes, you will need to backup the registry to have if needed. Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Go to File->Export and save the registry somewhere as a backup (not to a temp folder). Close the Registry Editor.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"System"=""
Open Notepad and copy and paste the above text (inside the box) into the text file. Now go to File > Save As and call it fixer.reg. Where it says "Files of Type", select All Files and click on Save. Exit Notepad, double-click on the file and ok the prompt asking if you wish to merge the file with your registry. Reboot after this and post back an update on how things are running at this point.

OK - I did the registry merge and double checked the actual registry to verify that instead of "kdcfy.exe" in the changed entry, it was now "" (empty). The computer seems to running nicely, no redirects or hangs/crashes in the last few days or so (two weeks ago, it was hanging quite a bit for a year-old comp).

there is however a slight issue with spy-bot resident protection programs teatimer and/or sdhelper.
I've had them off while i've performed the cleaning tasks but now i would like to turn them back on.. when i turn the on, it seems the change in the registry due to the fixer.exe program gets denied and the old "kdcfy.exe." entry goes back...I kind of like using the resident programs because it seems to give notice when any changes are introduced to the registry, nice so nothing can get slipped it..

what do you think...... and thanks again...

also... what would you recommend in terms on my day-to-day protection against more mal/spy/viral infections..
my business affiliation provides symantec antivirus free for me and i run spybot and adaware every so often. i am running the 2wire firewall provided by my internet provider but could also use symantec client firewall or microsoft (i found that having multiple firewalls was possibly slowing this down, but i could be wrong.) also, i like the idea of have spybots teatime running or something similar.. what do you think??

For choices like the best setup for security there, protective software selection is more influenced by what has worked for you, and what does work for you (and issues like expense and system compatibility as well). Regardless of which software used, if you use good security practices like those listed here you will do well.

SpyBot's TeaTimer takes a "snapshot" of the system's registry, and uses this to undo changes made. It is intended as a means of returning the registry to previous settings when unwanted changes occur. Here it is returning unwanted previous settings. What will need to be done is to remove it's previous snapshot, make the changes, and then you can go on with a cleaned system and a new SpyBot snapshot. By the looks of all those "Denied" changes in the list you posted we will need to get some new logs and go through some removals again first.

Right click Here and download ResetTeaTimer.bat to your desktop (Save Target/Link As).

Be sure both SpyBot and TeaTimer are not running, then click on ResetTeaTimer.bat to make the changes. Since it will not be needed again delete ResetTeaTimer.bat. This will be the step to remove the previous TeaTimer registry snapshot, which you can then refresh after we are done.

Then run new HijackThis and Silent Runners scans, and post those logs here for review please.

Good work - looks good. There is a gap in the Running process portion of the HijackThis log you posted - this was just due to copy/pasting it here? Just making sure when reviewing logs here.

Any issues there at this point?

Looking back at that big 'ol gap I left at the bottom of a post my pasting could use some fine tuning as well. Good things are okay and glad to assist Dan. Just a final step of clearing the System Restore should do it. To do this, right-click My Computer and select Properties. Click the System Restore tab in the window that appears, and check the box that says "Turn off System Restore on all drives" and click Apply.

You will be asked if you are sure, click Yes. This will delete the restore points. Then click OK in the Properties window and reboot your computer.

When your desktop appears, right-click My Computer and select Properties once more. Uncheck the "Turn off System Restore..." box and click Apply. OK.

In addition, if I haven't already done so I'd like to recommend reviewing the information Here to make sure you stay malware free.
