Hi and welcome to Bleeping Computer! My name is Sam and I will be helping you.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Well that didn't show us anything. Let's dig a bit deeper.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS)

1. Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (or other convenient location).
2. Close any open applications and windows.
3. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
4. When the scan is complete, a text file will open - main.txt
5. Copy the text from that log and paste it into your post.

Note: Some firewalls may warn that sigcheck.exe is trying to access the internet. Please allow it permission to do so.
Posted Image If I have helped you in any way, please consider a donation to help me continue the fight against malware.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

That log shows your restore points, so they're intact. But it doesn't show any signs of malware.
Are you experiencing any other issues besides the ones that you described?

the restore points only date back a couple of weeks. all the other ones disappeared one day when i went to do a restore. i ran all the normal housekeeping programs which picked up a few things, but i was just concerned that all those points disappeared and it appears as though i am constantly receiving data according to my local area connection status icon in my taskbar even after i halt all internet traffic with my trend micro pc-cillin internet security. i tried closing all programs which would normally access the internet as well, but i still seem to be receiving packets.

If at any time you had disabled System Restore, all of your previous restore points would have been removed. You also can adjust the amount of space that is allocated to restore files. Once you begin exceeding that space, the older restore points are removed to make space for the new ones.

As long as you have a connection to the Internet you're always going to be showing some minor traffic. There are numerous programs in your running processes that will periodically access the net. That itself does not indicate a malware issue. If you're concerned, you should have a setting with your firewall that will allow you to block all traffic in or out, essentially locking the door tight.
