Hey there everyone. First post, so be gentle. It seems like you guys do great work here, so thanks for all of that.

I have a problem where my computer will "freeze." Certain programs (not all) will stop responding (typically Firefox, Thunderbird, AIM). The entire taskbar will not respond to clicks either. I can alt-tab to different windows, and some programs will be running just fine. Trying to force the unresponsive programs to shut down doesn't do anything.

Sometimes if I wait long enough, it will unfreeze, but more often I do a hard reset. I did have some virus problems a month ago, but I'm clean now.

One theory which I'm not sure is true is that the problem is being caused by having multiple realtime scanners running at once. Would that sort of thing cause this sort of behavior?

I'm running XP with SP2.

Here's a HijackThis log:

Hello,

I notice from your log that you are running more than one different Anti-Virus programs with Auto-protect enabled. Trendmicro and Sophos
Never install more than one Antivirus and Firewall! Rather than giving you extra protection, it will decrease the reliability of it seriously!
The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Also because more than one Antivirus and Firewall installed are not compatible with eachother, it can cause system performance problems and a serious system slowdown.

I would strongly advise you to only have one Anti-Virus with the Auto-Protect feature running at any one time!
If you decide to only keep one Anti-Virus installed,
you should uninstall the other(s) through the Add or Remove Programs option in Control Panel.

Reboot after uninstalling.

Then, * Download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished and after reboot (in case it asks to reboot), it should open a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
