I have a HP/Compaq laptop here running XP SP2. Yesterday it was working fine according to the user but today there is no Taksbar or desktop icons. Doesn't matter whether I start it in Safe mode or normal mode the problem still remains. I cannot even get any programs to run from the task manager. I did find a topic on this forum that said to use the run command and enter a period in the dialog box to restore the desktop but that didn't work either. I can get the task manager to come up and I can access the registry editor that way. Does anyone know of a registry fix for this problem? I really don't want to have to reinstall Windows since I don't have an image for this particular machine and I don't really have time to start from scratch and hunt for drivers.
Thanks for any help you may have.

I hope that i have understand what you have just asked.

After you have logon into windows, can you try to press CTR + ALT + DEL together and see if it brings up the task manager. If it does, now on the File menu, select New Task (Run...). Type in "explorer.exe" and press OK.

Now, see if it brings back your taskbar.

Lets' say it doesn't help, you can try out this and see if it helps.

Let me know the result.

Didn't install any new software?
Then have a look at Windows cannot load your profile because it may be corrupted.

You can try the System Restore to an Earlier Date before it happened.
To perform System Restore do the following:
Click All Programs/ Accessories/ System Tools/ System Restore.

You might also want to look for Spyware/malware and Viruses, try to scan for them in both safe Mode and Normal Mode.
Chaos reigns within.
Reflect, repent, and reboot.
Order shall return.

ALready tried all of those things Tmack thanks anyway! The main problem was that I couldn't get the explorer.exe program to stay running when I tried to start it from the Task Manager (File -> New Task,etc.). Tried replacing the explorer.exe file from the Windows CD in REcovery console too, still no go. All is ok now though I just decided to re-image the machine and start fresh.
Thanks for all the input guys!
