Hey all,

1- When my computer is idle for a while and windows is locked, upon unlock, when I try to start an application (notepad, internet explorer, any application) I get a message saying "not enough available ressource to perform task" while there is nothing running on my computer.

2- Also, I cannot update my anti-virus unless I reboot the computer.

3- My firewall (zonealarm) shuts down on its own and to restart it, I have to reboot it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Hello super goku,

I am SifuMike and I will be helping you. I am not seeing much in your log, so lets dig deeper.

Disable your antivirus program and go here http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html and run an online scan with BitDefender (you will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan). When the ActiveX Control has loaded, click on "Click here to scan". Please be patient, as this scan may take a few hours. It all depends on the number of files on your computer.

When BitDefender completes the scan, select the "Detected Problems" tab.
Click on "Click here to export scan".
Save the file as an HTML to your Desktop.
Then click on the saved file and allow it to open with your browser.
Go to Edit - Select All then copy/paste that log back here.
Post the BitDefender log.

******************

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune DO NOT run it yet.

Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 (formerly Ewido)
This is a 30 day trial of the program

AVG Anti-Spyware is designed to be used to both scan for and remove malicious files and also to run in real-time alongside, but not replace, your existing anti-virus program to give an added layer of protection.
Both the Resident Shield and Automatic Updates will only be available for the thirty day trial period, after that AVG Anti-Spyware will revert to a stand-alone scanner which you can keep and manually update for free and use in a similar way to Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spybot S&D etc.

1. After download, double click on the file to launch the install process.
2. Choose a language, click "OK" and then click "Next".
3. Read the "License Agreement" and click "I Agree".
4. Accept the default installation path: C:\Program Files\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 and click "Next", then click "Install".
5. After setup completes, click "Finish" to start the program automatically or launch ewido by double-clicking its icon on your desktop or in the system tray.
6. The main "Status" menu will appear. You can select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Sheild' and 'Automatic Updates'. If you choose to do this, then right click on ewdio in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".
7. Select the "Update" button and click "Start update". If you are having problems with the updater, manually update with the Ewido Full database installer from here.
8. Exit AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 when done - DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method so Windows will start with minimal drivers and running processes.
To do this restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup [but before the Windows icon appears] press the F8 key repeatedly.
A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

1.) Double-click the small BLUE Garbage Can ATF-Cleaner.exe file to run the program.
2.) At the top, under Main choose: Select All
3.) Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use the Firefox browser:
1.) At the top, click Firefox and choose: Select All
2.) Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

If you use the Opera browser:
1.) At the top, click Opera and choose: Select All
2.) Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Scan with AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 as follows:

1. Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.

Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.

Under "How to Scan?" check all (default).

Under "Possibly unwanted software" check all (default).

Under "What to Scan?" make sure "Scan every file" is selected (default).

Under "Reports" select "Automatically generate report after every scan" and UNcheck "Only if threats were found".

2. Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
3. Click "Complete System Scan" to start.

4. IMPORTANT : Don't click on the "Save Scan Report" button before you did hit the "Apply all Actions" button.

Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
(1)
, if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
(2) At the bottom of the window click on the Apply all Actions button.
(3) When done, click the Save Scan Report button.
(4) Click the Save Report as button.
Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt.
Save to your desktop.
A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports\
Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.

Reboot to Normal Mode.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
Disable script blocking if you have Norton Antivirus installed so it will not interfere with the fix.

To disable Norton AntiVirus Script Blocking
Start Norton AntiVirus. If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security, then start that program.
Click Options. If you see a menu, click Norton AntiVirus.
In the left pane, click Script Blocking.
In the right pane, uncheck Enable Script Blocking (recommended).
Click OK

Trojan Hunter has been reported to detect combofix as Worm.Qiv.100.

When done, submit the ComboFix log, the BitDefender log, the [b]AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5
log and a fresh Hijackthis log.

Hi super goku,

I am not see any malware in your log, but we can do some cleanup.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of  Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language  jre-6-windows-i586.exe and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u1-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not run it yet!

CCleaner Tutorial

*******************************************

In Normal Mode, select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix."

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

These are optional fixes. The following are not necessarily spyware/malware, but I suggest you place a check mark next to the following entries, as these programs may be taking up system resources.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] \"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe\" -osboot
(Description: RealPlayer scheduler. Completely unnecessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
(Description: Apple’s QuickTime Tray Icon which enables you to start QuickTime from the System Tray (from version 5 onward).   Given the extremely simple functionality of this Tray icon, it is in our view an unreasonable resource hog – it has been measured to use as much as 1.5Mb of memory at times in earlier versions, and in version 7 it uses as much as 3.4Mb of memory on our test systems.  Yet, on Windows PCs hardly anyone starts QuickTime manually, whether from the System Tray or otherwise – what usually happens is that the end-user opens a QuickTime movie file or email attachment and Windows then automatically opens QuickTime to enable the end-user to view the movie or video.  There is therefore almost never a need for the end-user to start QuickTime manually from the System Tray. )

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [C-Media Mixer] Mixer.exe /startup
(Description: C-Media produce audio chipsets that are often found on popular motherboards with on-board audio. Provides System Tray access to change audio settings. Available via Start -> Settings -> Control Panel or Start -> Programs . Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] \"C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_11\bin\jusched.exe\"
(Description: Sun Java update scheduler. Checks for updates. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

CAUTION: Please do NOT use the Issues button. This is a built-in registry cleaner. If you don’t know how to use it, you may cause irreparable damage to your system.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
• Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies.
• Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
• Clean all entries in the "System" section.
• Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
• Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
• Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
• Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
• Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
• Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

reboot your computer,

1- When my computer is idle for a while and windows is locked, upon unlock, when I try to start an application (notepad, internet explorer, any application) I get a message saying "not enough available ressource to perform task" while there is nothing running on my computer.

Right-click an empty space on the system bar (bottom of the screen) and select Task Manager.
When in task manager, click on the Processes tab and click on the and click on the Show Processes from all users button.

This should show all processes running on your system. Click on the CPU label in the CPU utilization column till all the processes are sorted by the amount of CPU that is being used. Which processes are using the CPU?

2- Also, I cannot update my anti-virus unless I reboot the computer.

Lets check your HOSTS file.
It's located at c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.
You can open it up in Notepad.
If it's just some lines on top with a # in front of it and followed by 127.0.0.1 localhost, then you don't need to post it;
however, if there are others following 127.0.0.1 localhost, you may have to fix it.
Post it here if that's the case.

3- My firewall (zonealarm) shuts down on its own and to restart it, I have to reboot it.

Often a fresh install will solve this problem but first uninstall Zone Alarm this way.
Go into the start menu locate the zonelabs entry and right click on the uninstaller and select properties.
Now in the target box you must add a space and then /clean to the end so that it looks something like this "C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe" /clean click apply and then OK.
Next open ZoneAlarm and turn off the load on boot option, then reboot and then run the uninstaller. This should get rid of all of ZoneAlarm.

Now go to your windows temp folder and delete everything.

For Internet Explorer 5 and above, you can follow these directions to clear out temporary files and delete cookies.

1) Open Internet Explorer and click on Tools
2) Click on Internet Options
3) On the General Tab, in the middle of the screen, click on Delete Files
4) You may also want to check the box "Delete all offline content"
5) Click on OK and wait for the hourglass icon to stop after it deletes the temporary internet files
6) You can now click on Delete Cookies and click OK to delete cookies that websites have placed on your hard drive.

To clear the Internet History in IE:

1) Open Internet Explorer and click on Tools
2) Click on Internet Options
3) On the General Tab, in the middle of the screen, click on Clear History
4) Click OK

Now download and install a new copy of Zone Alarm.

Post a new Hijackthis log, and tell me how your computer is running.

Hello super goku,

Your log looks clean! Good job on the cleanup! How is the computer acting?

Let's clean your System Restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows.
The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files.
This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

1. Turn off System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK

2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE, NOT on a regular basis

System Restore will now be active again.

Please read and follow How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!

SifuMike,

I am having problems browsing the internet now...

IE7: does not find the web-sites. In order to make it work, I need to first open the browser in REAL Player.

Firefox: gives me the following alert message: "Could not initialize the browser's security component. The most likely cause is problems with files in your browser's profile directory. Please check that this directory has no read/write restrictions and your hard disk is not full or close to full. It is recommended that you exit the browser and fix the problem. If you continue to use this browser session, you might see incorrect browser behaviour when accessing security features"

Help!

Hi super goku,

IE7: does not find the web-sites. In order to make it work, I need to first open the browser in REAL Player.

Reset Internet Explorer Settings: go to Tools Menu, Internet Options, Advanced Tab and click on Reset… button

Sounds like the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is disabled. Follow the directions here:

SifuMike...

The problem is more evident than before.

1- ZoneAlarm shuts down by itself (VSMON.exe)
2- When no programs are running on my computer and I try to open a program I get a message saying: "Insufficient Ressources"

This happens when I download IE7 along with the security updates

Hi super goku,

When no programs are running on my computer and I try to open a program I get a message saying: "Insufficient Resources"

I went to MS support
http://support.microsoft.com/search/?adv=1
and put Insufficient Resources in the search field and found lots of hits, but could not find anything to help you.

Your computer is clean of malware, so this is problem with Zone Alarm or Windows XP.
My expertise is malware removal, so I am going to refer you to your Windows XP forum and the Zone Alarm forum.

ZoneAlarm shuts down by itself (VSMON.exe)

For the Zone Alarm shutdown problem, contact the Zone Alarm forum here: http://forums.zonealarm.com/zonelabs

As a work around, you could uninstall Zone Alarm and try one of these free firewalls:
Sunbelt Kerio Firewall

Outpost Firewall Free

Jetico Personal Firewall

Comodo

Be sure to have only one firewall installed and running on your computer, as two will cause severe problems.

Sorry I could not help you more. :flowers:

SifuMike,

Thank you for your help...do I have to post anything to the Windows XP forum or the Zone Alarm Forum or you told them my problem?

Thank you
Goku
