Posted 21 April 2007 - 04:33 PM

I am using AVG Free, Spybot, Zonealarm and all up to date.

In taskmanager I have noticed a new program in the list called MCM.exe

I have also noticed that when i type a search in the main bar of firefox, instead of going straight to the site i want directly now it goes to a search engine called finderactive.com. Firefox used to take me directly to the page i had typed in the long www. bar.

Please could someone help me remove this and MSM.exe?

I have done a full scan with all of the above programs and found nothing. I have just found out about hijackthis and im not sure how to use it but i have created a log file:

Hello there and welcome to BleepingComputer. My name is Charles and I will be dealing with your log today.
Please move HijackThis to a permanent folder. Anywhere is fine, other than your Desktop or a temporary folder. If it is in one of these locations, there is a risk that you may accidentally delete the backups; which may be needed if we fix something we're not meant to.
If you use Windows XP it may be that you just double clicked on the HijackThis.exe file, but this only extracts the file to a temporary folder. If you right click on it and select Extract, you can choose a folder to place it in.

How to make a permanent folder:
Click Start | My Computer | Local Disk (C: ) | Program Files.
In the menu bar at the top, go to File | New | Folder.
That will create a folder named "New Folder", which you can rename to "HijackThis". You have now created C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
Now get your HijackThis.exe file and place it in your folder.

The current formatting of your log makes it almost impossible to read, so open up Notepad.
On top, click Format then uncheck "Word Wrap".
Please post me a new HijackThis log now this option has been turned off.
Thanks,
Charles

Sorry about that and thanks for your help Charles.

Actually I feel a little embarrassed to say that I dont have the virus I thought I had! I use the PC only through a TV and i mistook MOM.exe (which is part of ATI drivers as of 7.2), for MSM.exe but I am concerned about hose first few entries called hosts.

Hi again,
You are using peer-to-peer programs.
These are what we call an optional removal. However, anytime you are running any type of peer-to-peer application, you are more prone to infection by malware, and this is probably how you became infected in the first place. The choice to remove them is entirely up to you, but I would strongly recommend that you do.
If you do not want to, please at least refrain from using any peer-to-peer programs for the remainder of my fix.
For more information about infections as a result of p2p programs, take a look here: http://p2p.malwareremoval.com/

Please download HostsXpert from here
Unzip HostsXpert.zip
Open HostsXpert.exe
Then click on "Restore Microsoft's Host File", followed by OK at the prompt.
Close the program when complete.

Post back a new HijackThis log after rebooting your PC.
Thanks,
Charles

To do as you asked the only I could restore MS hosts was to click 'make writable' otherwise I just got an error and the program quit. I then put it back to non-writable as it was before (greyied out on right side list).

Hi there, things are looking a lot better.
Please print off a copy of these instructions, and also save them to a Notepad file on your desktop, so they are easily accessible.
We are going to boot into Safe Mode later in the fix, and there is no internet access.

Scan again with HijackThis and put a checkmark next to each of the following entries (if present):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O23 - Service: Auto HotKey Poller - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\winpol.exe (file missing)

Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix checked button.

Please reboot your computer into Safe Mode.
This is done by rebooting Windows and pressing F8 at boot/Windows startup, usually right after the beep.
Then select Safe Mode from the list.
Make sure you choose the option without Networking Support.

Set your system to show all files.
Navigate to Start | My Computer | Tools | Folder Options.
Select the View tab. Under the "Hidden Files and Folders" heading, select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.

Next, please find and delete the following file (if present):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\winpol.exe

Copy and paste the following text into Notepad:
sc stop "Auto HotKey Poller"
sc delete "Auto HotKey Poller"
Save this as "services.bat" Choose to save as *all files and place it on your Desktop.
Double-click services.bat.

Let's clean out your temporary internet files:
Close all open windows before we start.
Go to Start | Control Panel | Internet Options | General.
Click the Delete Cookies button.
Next to it, click the Delete Files button.
When prompted, place a check in: 'Delete all offline content', click OK

If you have Firefox installed, we need to clean out these temporary files as well:
Go to Tools | Options.
Click Privacy.
Press the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
Click OK to finish, before closing it.
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.

Now we'll clean other temporary files and your Recycle Bin:
Go to Start | Run | type: cleanmgr | OK.
Let it scan your system for files to remove.
Make sure 'Temporary Files', 'Temporary Internet Files', and 'Recycle Bin' are the only things checked.
Press OK to remove them.

Reboot into Normal Mode again.

Please run Panda's ActiveScan.
Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
A new window will open, click the Check Now button.
Enter your personal details.
Click the big Scan Now button.
It will ask to install various content - please allow this.
It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan, which may take a while.
When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan.
When the scan has finished - if anything malicious is found - click the See Report button.
Click Save Report and save the file to your Desktop, so you can post this log in your next reply.

Post back the Panda log along with a new HijackThis log.
Thanks,
Charles
