Hi Guys,

I just registered yesterday, so please be patient. Im usually quite good with detecting and fighting virus infections, but this one is proving to be quite stubborn.

SYSTEM: - Pentium 4 3ghz - 2.0GB RAM - Nvidia GeForce 7600 AGP - 250GB HD - Windows XP/SP2 -
2MB Speedtouch Broadband connection

SYMPTOMS: - I keep getting messages saying that im either not connected to the internet, or whether i wish to currently stay offline or connect to a web page. I assume that these are Internet explorer messages. I use Firefox as a web browser. Mostly I get these messages while I am actually online and I can just click them away. Other times, i get caught on Firefox, and I get wisked away to web sites for things like windoctorpro 2007, www.debtservice.com and other anti-virus sites asking me to download their software. Occassioanly this is followed up by a windows message telling me im flooded with virus's and I need to get a certain programme or the end of the world will come, or some nonsense along those lines. Sometimes I get 5 messages in 10 mins, other times I get 1 message over 3 or 4 hours.

ANTI-VIRUS: - My comp is mainly protected with windows firewall and Symantec anti-virus. I also use regularly SpyBot S&D - AdAware SE Personal - Abexo RegEdit and CCleaner. At the end of each internet session with firefox, all data including cookies and temp files are deleted. No browser history is kept. All Anti-Virus software have the most up to date detection logs.

WHAT I HAVE DONE SO FAR: - I have used VundoFix - SmitFraudFix - CWshredder - scanned with all of the above programmes and gone through your sites page of what to do, if suspected of infection. When I do this, I get a good few hours of piece. However it then later returns. The longer I leave it, the worse it becomes. It is starting to become quite annoying now. My virus programmes, show a few infections by smittoolbar 888, which it deletes, it finds vundo which it deletes, and then when ran on reboot, everything is completely clean on everything. But again later it returns.

WHAT I SUSPECT: - I saw a file pop up in one of my desktop folders - something like stng260.opt, which led me to believe I was infected by RBot - afw. I cant seem to detect it though with any software.

PLEASE HELP!!

Here is my Hijackthis LOG: -

THANKS FOR ANY REPLIES - hope i have mentioned everything you need to know. Oh yes. I also think I know why i got infected in the first place. Silly me was trying to get access to a programme by downloading a serial number. Ummmm BAD IDEA!! They dont have serial numbers to unlock full access to programmes. I have learnt my lesson!!

Welcome to the BleepingComputer HijackThis Logs and Analysis forum Jacob_b182

The current formatting of your log makes it difficult to read/evaluate.
Open 'Notepad',click on 'Format' at the top, then uncheck 'Word Wrap' if it's checked.

**************************

Please go to:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\SYSTEM CLEAN TOOLS\HijackThis.exe
Right click on Hijackthis.exe and select 'Rename', rename it to abc.bat
Double click on abc.bat(which is still Hijackthis.exe),post that log into your next reply please.

Please download Combofix and save to the desktop:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/Beta/ComboFix.exe
Note:
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

Close any open browsers.
Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply along with a new Hijackthis log please.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running.
That may cause the program to freeze/hang.

On the main page click the 'Update' tab,and then 'Start Update'.
Note:
If you have any problems running the update process prior to running the scan,download/install the 'Full Database' from here:
http://download.ewido.net/avgas-signatures-full-current.exe

Once the updates have been installed,do the following:
Select the 'Scanner' icon at the top of the screen, then select the 'Settings' tab.
Once in the 'Settings' screen, under 'How to act?',then under 'Set default action for detected malware to:', click on 'Recommended actions',then click on 'Quarantine'.
Under 'Reports' select 'Automatically generate report after every scan' and unselect 'Only if threats were found'.
Exit AVG Anti-Spyware,don't run the scan just yet.

You might want to print/copy the following as you need to be in Safe Mode from here on.

Reboot your computer into SAFE MODE using the F8 method.
To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly.
A menu will appear with several options.
Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Have Hijack This fix the following [If still present], by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and selecting 'Fix checked'.
Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing:

The report can be found under the 'Reports' tab at the top.
