My daughters computer will not let her do anything other than play the odd game. ANYTHING else we get the error message "Windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close". We cannot access the internet or "control panel" or "my computer". Have swept with Ad-aware and Sbybot S&D and anti-virus but nothing significant. HJT log follows:

Hi and welcome to Bleeping Computer! My name is Sam and I will be helping you.

Please download ComboFix and save it to your desktop.
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's done running it will produce a log for you. Please post that log in your next reply.

Important Note - Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

We need to see a little more information.

Download FindLop. Unzip the file. It will create a folder. From the extracted files, locate findlop.bat and double click on it. It will generate a log file - C:\findlop.txt

Find that file and copy the content into your next post along with a new HijackThis log.

Also if you could disable the double spacing in notepad it would make the logs much easier to read.

Hi again Sam,

I appreciate your help with this and hope the files below help. The double spacing is something to do with the fact that I use a Mac not a PC. The original file is single spaced but when I copy and paste it from my flash drive it becomes double spaced; I know not why! Anyhow I've tidied the files up manually as best I could.

Aaahhhh....thank you. That's much easier to read.
When you spend as much as I do looking over logs, a small thing like double spacing can slow down the process.

Open notepad and copy and paste this text in it:
%systemdrive%
cd C:\WINDOWS\Tasks
attrib -r -s -h B18A10529CB188DA.job
del B18A10529CB188DA.job
deltree /y c:\docume~1\alex\applic~1\errorrdr

Save this as remjob.bat , choose to save it as *all files and place it on your desktop.
Doubleclick on remjob.bat. A doswindow will open and close again, this is normal.

==============

This infection is caused by a program you have installed on your computer. Obviously it is recommended that you uninstall this program in order to prevent the LOP infection from coming back.

Click Start -> Control Panel -> Add Remove Programs and uninstall this program:

Messenger Plus

==============

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of the lines listed below. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MessengerPlus3] "C:\Program Files\MessengerPlus! 3\MsgPlus.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [2 32 okay rdr] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Gpl Jump 2 32\NurbRoad.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [book eggs] C:\DOCUME~1\Alex\APPLIC~1\errorrdr\Test atom.exe

Reboot your computer.

==============

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report along with a new hijackthis log.

Sam

Thanks for this. For some reason I didn't get a notification email that you had responded to my last post so didn't see it until just now. I will try your suggestions later today and get back to you.

 I think we're almost there!

I did as you said and things are much better - I'm hesitating to say fine although first indications are the problem is gone.

I decided to purchase Panda ScanPro as it found a few nasties and it was cheap enough that I could get it to clean them off without troubling you any further. I post the two logs for HJT and Panda below:

ActivScan Pro Log:

The cookies are now gone. ComboFix is presumably safe as you told me to put it on but I have no idea about atom.exe. Should I go ahead and delete it manually??

These files are part of the LOP infection and should be deleted.

C:\Documents and Settings\Alex\Application Data\errorrdr\bprqzcxi.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Alex\Application Data\errorrdr\more idle two dale.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Alex\Application Data\errorrdr\Test atom.exe

Panda shows them as being disinfected, so don't be concerned if you can't locate them.

Otherwise, your hijackthis log looks clean to me! :flowers:

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

    • Click once on the Security tab

    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
