I've been getting random popups recently. I've used multiple removal programs and nothing has worked.

Hello big_bopper180,

Disable your antivirus program and go here http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html and run an online scan with BitDefender (you will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan). When the ActiveX Control has loaded, click on "Click here to scan". Please be patient, as this scan may take a few hours. It all depends on the number of files on your computer.

When BitDefender completes the scan, select the "Detected Problems" tab.
Click on "Click here to export scan".
Save the file as an HTML to your Desktop.
Then click on the saved file and allow it to open with your browser.
Go to Edit - Select All then copy/paste that log back here.
Post the BitDefender log.

******************

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language jre-6-windows-i586.exe and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
******************

I need you to rename Hijackthis because I believe that you may have the Vundo infection that can hide some entries in your log.
  • Please go to the folder where you saved Hijackthis.exe:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Bart Calvi\Desktop\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe
  • Right-click on it, then select Rename.
  • Name it something like: AnalyzeThis.exe (or whatever you want)
  • Then double-click AnalyzeThis.exe to scan, then post the new logfile and the BitDefender log.

Hello big_bopper180,

The program SpywareBot is on the Rogue antispyware list
See here: Rogue antispyware list
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

I see Viewpoint installed.
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad".
This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now, if you did not install it.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

Viewpoint
Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player
SpywareBot

If you uninstalled, please nvigate to and delete the following folders
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
C:\Program Files\SpywareBot

CCleaner Tutorial

How to Reboot into Safe Mode
tap F8 key during reboot, until the boot menu appears...use the arrow keys to choose "Safe Mode" from the menu......,then press the "Enter" key. If that does not work this go to this site: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-start-windows-in-safe-mode/

Please boot into Safe Mode and select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix.”

O2 - BHO: Flash media version 3.1 - {0DF2A545-CAB5-47E8-9A8A-E92C93C23962} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\flmedia.dll
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpywareBot] C:\Program Files\SpywareBot\SpywareBot.exe -boot
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp_v.dll

*******************************************

Next, we're going on a file hunt.
Go to My Computer and double-click C.
Go to the Tools menu and select 'Folder Options'.
On the 'View' tab select 'show hidden files and folders',
deselect (uncheck) 'hide protected operating system files (recommended)', and
deselect (uncheck) "Hide extensions for known file types.'

Don't use the windows start\search feature
Using Windows Explorer, find and delete each of the following. If you can't delete an item, right-click it and click properties. Make sure 'read-only' is unchecked.
If you still can't delete something, right-click it and rename it to a random word. Then drag the item to a different location. Try deleting it now. If you still can't, be sure to let me know.

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following files/folders in bold (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp_v.dll <==file

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

Do not use the "Issues" block . It's meant for professionals.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
• Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies.
• Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
• Clean all entries in the "System" section.
• Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
• Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
• Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
• Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
• Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
• Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

Reboot to the Normal Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log and tell me how your computer is running.

Sorry about the slow response. I've been busy with school. I was unable to find this file. HJT said it was there, I fixed it, and it appears to be gone now.

Also, I'm nervous about CCleaner...I have a lot of files for school on here and it would be horrible if they got deleted. Is there a chance they they will get deleted? Because if so, I will wait a couple weeks and do this during the summer, when it wont matter.

Edit: I did run VundoFix, and it said there were no infected files. I have not run CCleaner yet, however.

Hi big_bopper180,

Please post the VundoFix log, even if it says no infected files.

It is up to you, if you dont feel comfortable running it now, then wait till school is over. :flowers:
If you dont have any of your files stored in a temp folder, then they will be safe.

What you can do is to use the CCleaner Analyze button. That will not delete anything, but list all the files that will be deleted when you press the Clean button.
Did you read the CCleaner tutorial I posted, as that explains how CCleaner works.

Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log so I can make sure all the malware is gone.

Hi big_bopper180,

Good thing you posted the VundoFix log as I see you need to uninstall Java version 1.5.0.4. It is vulnerability to malware.

I see you have SpywareBot installed.
SpywareBot is on the list of "Rogue/Suspect" products so I recommend you uninstall it.

Please go to Start > Settings > Control Panel and select Add/Remove Programs. From there you can select to uninstall SpywareBot and Java version 1.5.0.4.

Note that there is highly recommended antispyware product I can recommend called Spybot 1.4
Spybot Tutorial

In Normal Mode, select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix.”

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpywareBot] C:\Program Files\SpywareBot\SpywareBot.exe -boot

These are optinal fixes. The following are not necessarily spyware/malware, but we suggest you place a check mark next to the following entries, as these programs may be taking up system resources.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [igfxhkcmd] C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe
(Description: Intel hotkey applet. Unnecessary. Removing this will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] \"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe\" -osboot
(Description: RealPlayer scheduler. Completely unnecessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\jusched.exe
(Description: Sun Java update scheduler. Checks for updates. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following folders in bold (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)
C:\Program Files\SpywareBot\ <==folder

Reboot your computer, post a fresh Hijackthis log and tell me how your computer is running.

Ok well the good news is I havent had a single pop-up all day, so that's good. One thing is kind of suspicious though. I found something strange in my control panel and took a screenshot of it:

Spybot seems to be gone everywhere else, though, but it wont let me delete this file. Any ideas?

Anyways, here's the new HJT log:

Hi big_bopper180,

Spybot seems to be gone everywhere else, though, but it wont let me delete this file. Any ideas?

Did you uninstall it with Start > Settings > Control Panel and select Add/Remove Programs?
And did you reboot after you uninstalled it?

You mean SpywareBot. Spybot is legit program, while SpywareBot is a program of dubious value.

A simple way to remove Control Panel icons in Windows XP or Windows 2000 is to use the Group Policy editor: Choose Start, Run, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter.
Use the tree on the left to navigate to Local Computer Policy\User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Control Panel.
With Control Panel selected in the left pane, double-click Hide specified Control Panel applets in the right pane.
In the dialog box, select Enabled on the Policy tab and click the Show button.
In the Show Contents dialog box, click Add (see FIGURE 1).
Type the name of any applet icon as it appears in Control Panel and click OK.

Repeat these last two steps for each icon you want to remove. When you've entered the names of all the icons you want to remove, double-check your spelling in the Show Contents dialog box.
If you change your mind about an item, select it and click Remove to take it off the list. Then click OK twice. This technique works for any Control Panel icon--even those added by non-Microsoft applications--but not for XP's category icons.

Your log looks clean.

Let's reset you files so they are hidden and protected.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect Show hidden files and folders.
Check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK

Let's clean your System Restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows.
The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files.
This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

1. Turn off System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK

2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE, NOT on a regular basis

System Restore will now be active again.
