I hope this is the right place for this, my Operating system is Windows XP home

My DVD-RW drive isn't being recognised as a DVD-RW drive, it just comes up in my
computers as a CD-R drive.

I can burn Audio Cd's and Video DVD's but when it comes to burning a Data Disk
on
either CD or DVD it gives me error messages, depending on what I use to attempt
the
burn (Nero 7 Ultra and just the stand microsoft drag and drop deal)

I have installed another CD/DVD-RW drive to see if it was a hardware issue, but
the
same thing happened.

I have unistalled the Drive and Reinstalled it, and even updated the Drivers.
Nothing
seems to be helping, and I am totally at a loss as to what the reason is.

I am leaving a reformatting to the very last option as I have lots of photos I
dont
want to loss (including wedding photos, etc). Figures when I try to back them up
I discover that for some reason I can not burn a data disk.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

A few questions :

What error messages do you get? There could be a number of issues at hand here. The shortest way is to do the following START RUN and type eventvwr. This will open a screen where you can choose from 3 options (Application System and Security) Please check there for red crosses, selec them them and post the contents here.
Event viewer tut

Did you try to burn with other brand of DVD?

Do you have XP SP2 on your computer?
Do you, or did you have other CD/DVD writing software on your PC like Sonic?
