Several months ago, I clicked on a link I shouldn't have. Immediately after, my Internet Explorer refused to work properly, opening a search page every time I attempted to go anywhere. I used a spyware removal tool, which solved that problem, but my computer has been excessively noisy ever since. After speaking with a good friend, he suggested that I may have more issues than just a noisy fan. He noted that my computer was using 87% of my RAM and I had 55 processes running, so I embarked on a crusade to rid my machine of this annoying whir. After running each reccommended removal and scan program (as well as installing a new firewall), I came up with this. I appreciate any assistance you can render.

Hello Tsuruchi

I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:
1) False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
2) System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Therefore please go to add/remove in the control panel and remove either Panda Antivirus 2007 or BitDefender.

Hello There Tsuruchi, Good Work :flowers:

Please print these instructions out, or write them down, as you can't read them during the fix.

Next, Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

MyWay
_______________________________________________________

Please open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis

_______________________________________________________

Please download MWav:
  • Unzip it to its predetermined directory (C:\Kaspersky)
  • Locate kavupd.exe in the new folder and double-click to Update.
  • If your firewall gives any messages about this program accessing to internet, allow it.
  • If it says the signatures are more than 30 days old, keep trying, until you get the actual definition updates.
  • When you see Updates Downloaded Successfully, hit Enter to continue.
  • Restart onto Safe Mode and locate the Kaspersky folder.
  • Locate mwavscan.com and double-click on it to launch the MWAV Scanner.
Now lets do the settings:
  • Leave the Default Settings checked.
  • Add a check to Drives
  • This will light up All Drives
  • Add a check to Scan all Files
  • Click Scan Clean to begin.
This scan might take around 3+ hours to finish when set to scan everything.
  • Please be sure it has finished before proceeding.
  • Once the scan has finished, all entries identified as Infected, will be displayed in the lower panel.
  • Highlight everything that is inside the lower panel and hit Ctrl+C at the same time to copy.
  • Open an empty notepad file and paste the results (Ctrl+V) to it. Save the notepad to your desktop, name it as you want (e.g; MWav Results).
Reboot into normal Windows and post the results here along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Thanks again for your help!

As near as I can tell, a power outage occured last night after the scan was run. I checked the Notepad log, it said the scan had completed before the power was cut. I searched the log for "Action Taken" and it came up with the following entries:

File C:\data infected by "Trojan-Downloader.Win32.IstBar.nh" Virus. Action Taken: File Deleted.

File C:\Documents and Settings\Tsuruchi Moriya\.housecall6.6\Quarantine\(Crack) tl95.zip.bac_a00596 infected by "Trojan-Downloader.Win32.IstBar.no" Virus. Action Taken: File Deleted.

File C:\Documents and Settings\Tsuruchi Moriya\My Documents\My Music\(2) tl95_rar.vir infected by "Trojan-Downloader.Win32.IstBar.nj" Virus. Action Taken: File Deleted.

And here's the HJT log:

Hello Tsuruchi

Please Go ahead and Emtpy Trend Micro Housecall Quarantine Folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\Tsuruchi Moriya\.housecall6.6\Quarantine

Now, Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete this file (if present):

C:\Documents and Settings\Tsuruchi Moriya\My Documents\My Music\(2) tl95_rar.vir

_______________________________________________________________

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore.
If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

Managing Windows Millenium System Restore
  • Windows XP System Restore Guide

Reenable system restore with instructions from tutorial above
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers
  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
  • Winpatrol <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software

The Housecall folder was empty and I couldn't find the .vir file in the specified location. I still only have around 40,000K available memory out of 514,124 total (and the fan is still whirring like a blender on liquefy). Short of reformatting the whole hard drive, is there anything else I can do to obtain more available memory?

After restarting my computer, it stayed fairly quiet for a few minutes. However, after I opened a program, it starting whirring, though not quite as intensely as before. I noticed that I have about 40,000K more available Physical Memory, for a grand total of appx 124,000 out of a total of 514,124.

Hi, Sorry for the delayed response.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, DSS will open two Notepads: main.txt and extra.txt
  • Use Save As to save both Notepad files to your Desktop and post them in your next reply.

After running the scan and posting the files, I restarted my PC, and before it got past the first loading screen, it was running exceptionally loudly. I'm down to around 80,000K Available Memory again.

Let's try something else

Download GMER and Unzip it to the desktop.

Open the program and click on the Rootkit tab.
Make sure all the boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for ‘Show All’.
Click on Scan.
When the scan has run click Copy and paste the results (if any) into this thread.
