Hello gagecube and welcome to BleepingComputer!

My name is Johannes and I will be dealing with your log today.
Please note that comments are made in green, links are in red and important things are outlined by using the blue color.

Please also take note of the following:
  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
Please give me some time to look over your log and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
Thanks,
Johannes

Hello gagecube,

It is important that you use a software firewall, to prevent unauthorised traffic both out of and into your computer.
Your log doesn't show a firewall running. If you have disabled it, please re-enable it.
If you do not have a firewall installed, please download and install one of these excellent (and free) products:Please download FixWareout from one of these sites: Fixwareout - Bleeping Computer or Fixwareout - Subratam
  • Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next > Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked > click Finish.
  • The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
  • You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
  • Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
  • Once the desktop loads save the text that will open (report.txt - just "click save" as and save it as report.txt to your desktop).
Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware v7.5
(This is Ewido 4.0 renamed. If you already have Ewido installed, please update to AVG Anti-Spyware which has a special "clean driver" for removing persistent malware.)
  • After download, double click on the file to launch the install process.
  • Choose a language, click "OK" and then click "Next".
  • Read the "License Agreement" and click "I Agree".
  • Accept default installation path: C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, click "Next", then click "Install".
  • After setup completes, click "Finish" to start the program automatically or launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking its icon on your desktop or in the system tray.
  • The main "Status" menu will appear. Select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Shield' and 'Automatic Updates'. As AVG Anti-Spyware may interfere with some of our other fixes, we are temporarily disabling it's active protection features until your system is clean, then you can reenable them.
  • Then right click on AVG Anti-Spyware in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".
  • Go to Start > Run and type: services.msc
  • Press "OK".
  • Click the "Extended tab" and scroll down the list to find AVG Anti-Spyware guard.
  • When you find the guard service, double-click on it.
  • In the Properties Window > General Tab that opens, click the "Stop" button.
  • From the drop-down menu next to "Startup Type", click on "Manual".
  • Now click "Apply", then "OK" and close the Services window.
  • Connect to the Internet, go back to AVG Anti-Spyware, select the "Update" button and click "Start update". Wait until you see the "Update succesfull message. If you are having problems with the updater, manually update with the AVG Anti-Spyware Full database installer from here.
  • Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done - DO NOT perform a scan yet.
Reboot your computer in SAFE MODE" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup [but before the Windows icon appears] press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with AVG Anti-Spyware as follows:
  • Click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.
  • Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.
  • Under "How to Scan?", "Possibly unwanted software", and What to Scan?" leave all the default settings.
  • Under "Reports" select "Automatically generate report after every scan" and UNcheck "Only if threats were found".
  • Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
  • Click "Complete System Scan" to start.
  • When the scan has finished you will be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.
IMPORTANT! Do not save the report before you have clicked the Apply all actions button. If you do, the log that is created will indicate "No action taken", making it more difficult to interpret the report. So be sure you save it only AFTER clicking the "Apply all actions" button.
  • Click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans. Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt. Save to your desktop. A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports\
  • Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done.
Note: Close all open windows, programs, and DO NOT USE the computer while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning. Doing so can hamper AVG Anti-Spyware's ability to clean properly and may result in reinfection.

In your next reply, please let me know how your PC is doing so far and post report.txt, Report-Scan-200704(dateofscan)-(timeofscan).txt and a fresh hijackthis log.

Thanks Johannes

Hello gagecube,

was it ok for me to take it out of safe mode now? and i have the windows firewall running.
thanks alot. look forward to your next post

Yes it was oke to take it out of safemode. Regarding your windows firewall - I strongly recommend you to use one of the suggested software firewalls as they provide much more protection than the windows integrated one.

looks much better now. Please now follow these steps to continue:

1. Click on start > run > and then paste the following into the "open" field: appwiz.cpl and press OK. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following if they exist:
Starware < version_number_here >

2. Click browse, find the file then click submit. Use one of the following links:
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html Or http://virusscan.jotti.org/

C:\WINDOWS\Temp\kdlnh.ren

Please post the results back to this thread.

3. Please download and Save Blacklight to your desktop:
  • Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement, click > scan then > next
  • You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
  • Copy and paste this log in your next reply. Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"
4. Run HijackThis, press Scan, and put a check mark next to all these entries:

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.115.59 85.255.112.126

Close all other windows and browsers, and press the Fix Checked button.

If you have a problem with your connection go to Start -> Control Panel, and choose Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and left click on properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio button that says Obtain DNS servers automatically. Click OK twice, and restart your computer.

Please report back in your next reply with the: fsecure blacklight log, virustotal result and a fresh hijackthis log.

Thanks Johannes

Hi Gagecube,

there was no starware file in add or remove programs so i couldnt do the virusscan.
my connections were fine. and now when i using internet explorer everthing is back to normal. thanks

Removing Starwar from the add/remove programs list is a seperate "task" to doing the virusscan and independent of each other.

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here: How to see hidden files in Windows

Please click this link-->Jotti

When the jotti page has finished loading, click the Browse button and navigate to the following file and click Submit.
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\kdlnh.ren

Please post back the results of the scan in your next post.

If Jotti is busy, try the same at Virustotal: http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

The Rootkit scan turned out fine, so did your HijackThis log. I do, however, see that you have not followed my suggestion to install a software firewall. This is somewhat risky while surfing today's internet.

The Windows firewall is better than nothing, but doesn't notify you of outgoing packets that could indicate an infection. Using a more manageable third party software firewall is always highly recommended. Even if you are using a hardware firewall, a software one will only help increase your security. Please see US-CERT's Understanding Firewalls for more info on why using a firewall is important.

Now please lets continue with cleaning up your pc.

1. Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u1-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
2. Please use your Program EvidentEliminator to clean your Temp Files

3. Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Webscan, to be on the save side that your PC has gotten rid of all unwanted stuff.

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Now before I give you the "all clean speech", please provide me with the following:
the result from the virustotal scan, the Kaspersky log, as well as a fresh HijackThis log.

Thanks

Johannes

ok i could not find the file C:\WINDOWS\Temp\kdlnh.ren. i set my computer to allow me to view hidden files and followed the file path but it doesnt exist and did a windows search. so again i couldnt do the virusscan. i did do the kaspersky scan and nothing was found, but when it finished i couldnt access the 'Save log as Text' button as i hadnt installed the gui. but as i found that out at the end i decided not to scan all over again as i had been given the information that no infections were found. sorry to sound like i dont appreciate the help it's just that i have things to do and those scans take a while. as for the firewall situation i am hesitant to install one as im am afraid of it conflicting with installed programs, and my wireless connection.

thanks.

Hi Gagecube,

ok i could not find the file C:\WINDOWS\Temp\kdlnh.ren. i set my computer to allow me to view hidden files and followed the file path but it doesnt exist and did a windows search. so again i couldnt do the virusscan. i did do the kaspersky scan and nothing was found, but when it finished i couldnt access the 'Save log as Text' button as i hadnt installed the gui. but as i found that out at the end i decided not to scan all over again as i had been given the information that no infections were found. sorry to sound like i dont appreciate the help it's just that i have things to do and those scans take a while. as for the firewall situation i am hesitant to install one as im am afraid of it conflicting with installed programs, and my wireless connection.

Thanks for giving that feedback. If you cannot find the file, it is oke. If the KAV returned clean that is fine too. Its just a better feeling to see the log oneself ;).

Please note that it seems that you have not uninstalled all previous Java versions installed before upgrading to 6u1. I would suggest to uninstall these as they are just taking up space and in this case are not necessary any more.

As for the Firewall issue ;) - I still recommend you should try a software firewall. I personally use Kerio Personal Firewall 2.15 , which is very light on resources and doesnt bother much with popups and distractions. If you dont like it, you can always uninstall it ;) .

The latest version can be found at sunbelt (who now own the kerio firewall product, but still offer it as freeware), and can be downloaded here: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Home-Home-Office/Sunbelt-Personal-Firewall/
Your log is clean! Great job!

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and enable system restore here:

or

Finally, and definitely the MOST IMPORTANT step, click on the following tutorial and follow each step listed there:
