Hey Guys,

First off thank you so much for your help. Lately my computer has had been shutting down unexpectedly a lot and running real on the internet. Right before it crashes, I get a pop up that says the following:

"Issas.exe application error. The exception Privileged instruction. (0xc0000096) occurred in the application at location 0x743q63f4."

Then i get option debug or cancel. No matter which I choose shortly afterwards I get a dialog box that says.

This computer is shutting down in 60 seconds
"this shut down was initiated by authority\system
the system process C:\WINDOWS\system32\Lsass.exe terminated unexpectedly with status code
1073741674. The system will now shut down and restart in 60 seconds."

After the computer shuts down and restarts, right after startup I get the dialog box that says:

"LSA shell (Export Version) encountered a problem and had to close. Do you wish to send an error report?"

The error report says
"szAppName : lsass.exe szAppVer : 5.1.2600.2180 szModName : pstorsvc.dll
szModVer : 5.1.2600.2180 offset : 000063f4"

This crash sequence is usually initiated whenever I to update windows. The crash usually occurs when I start to install the updates. I think it somehow related to the windows genuine copy checker which makes no sense cuz its running a genuine copy of windows.

My hijackthis log is as follows:

Hi destroy_all_dells,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer.

This log is clean.

Never thought I'd be sorry to say that, but it looks like your problem is more complicated than an infection.

I have never seen anything like this error message. I did some googling and there is not a lot of information about the pstorsvc.dll, even on the Microsoft website. I know it's a normal service running under lsass.exe, it shows that way on my machine and just like on yours, the file version number matches lsass.exe.

I suggest you post your problem on the WindowsXP forum here at BC. There are people over there who know a lot more about Windows error messages than I do. Just post the same information you have here but leave out the HijackThis log. Instead refer to this topic and tell them I have checked your log.

Best of luck in solving this issue.

Dave

edit: I found a thread on another forum indicating that McAfee was causing trouble with updates of another program -- SpywareBlaster, not Windows. But it might be worthwhile to temporarily disable your McAfee real-time scanner and see if that enables you to download and install the Windows Updates. If not, post your problem in the XP forum as I advised.

Dave thank you so much for looking at it. I'm sorry to use up your time if it there isn't a malware problem. Thanks for your help, you've definitely narrowed down the problem for me.

Take it easy,
Albert

Hi Albert,

No apologies needed, in your case a HijackThis analysis was needed. You had specific symptoms of the type that can be caused by malware.

The cases that bother me are where the user has a slow computer but no specific symptoms and posts a HJT log without making any effort to follow the Preparation Guide or the Pinned Topic on troubleshooting a slow computer.

Best of luck with this, I will leave the topic open for a while just in case you have any further questions.

Dave
