Note:
If you have any problems running the update process prior to running the scan,download/install the 'Full Database' from here:
http://download.ewido.net/avgas-signatures-full-current.exe

Select the 'Scanner' icon at the top of the screen, then select the 'Settings' tab.
Once in the 'Settings' screen, under 'How to act?',then under 'Set default action for detected malware to:', click on 'Recommended actions',then click on 'Quarantine'.

Exit AVG Anti-Spyware,don't run the scan just yet.

You might want to print/copy the following as you need to be in Safe Mode from here on.

Reboot your computer into SAFE MODE using the F8 method.
To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly.
A menu will appear with several options.

First I ran Kapersky, then AVG Anti-Root. Anti-Root didn't show problems, and didn't have a savable report, so I tried to apgrade, but couldn't connect to the server, then couldn't connect to *any* server although Network Connections showed an internet connection and a laptop on the same router *was* connected.

I tried to remove startup programs from msconfig, but suddenly the *puter rebooted itself and produced an error message about a major failure.

Despite multiple reboots, the *puter still can't connect to the internet using IE although Network Connections shows an internet connection and the laptop is still connected. I am sending this message for the laptop.

Click on Start/Run,type CMD then press Enter.
At the Command Prompt copy and paste the following bold text, then press Enter.
NETSH WINSOCK RESET
Then type EXIT then press Enter again, then restart your pc.

******************************

Go to:
Control Panel>System>Advanced tab>Startup and Recovery,Settings button.

The next time it tries to restart,it should display an error message on a blue screen instead.
Take note of that onscreen error message and let me know the exact wording please.

-New Problem. I was closing a scanned document window, when this blue screen came up.

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

The problem seems to be caused by the following file: ialmrnt5

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

The device driver got stuck in an infinite loop. THis usually indicates problem with the device itself or with the device drive programming the hardware incorrectly.

Please check with your hardware device vendor for any driver updates.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x000000EA (0xFF8F0198, 0xF995FCB4, 0x00000001)

ialmrnt5
Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance.

***Then after reboot***
The system has revocered from a serious error.

I've also noticed, when I shut down, some programs don't close without assistance.
