I can't open Explorer, keep getting error messages, the ones that ask you to send the error to Microsoft, then Explorer closes automatically. The window opens then the message box pops up, then the window closes. I ran Norton anti-virus, spybot, adaware, and Stinger, which all ran clean after one or two attempts, Stinger didn’t find anything. I also ran Trend Micro housecall, and got rid of 5 different malware programs, and still can’t access IE.

I usually use firefox, but need explorer for some apps. I have windows xp in case you need to know that.

I also ran Hijackthis, below is the log file from Hijackthis.

Can you please help?

Hi -

• Please download VundoFix.exe and save it to your Desktop.
- Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it
- Click the Scan for Vundo button
- Once it is done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button
- You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files
- Click YES
- Once you click YES, your Desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo
- When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer
- Click OK

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, so simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Once VundoFix has completed scanning, please do not run it again.
If you run it more than one time, you will overwrite the original log (vundofix.txt) generated when it was run the first time.

• Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Take only memories, leave nothing but footprints.

Hi -

You will have to print these directions because you will be working in Safe Mode without an Internet connection.

• Please set your system to show all files.
- Go to Start > open My Computer
- Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
- Select the View tab and, under Hidden files and folders, select Show hidden files and folders
- Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types
- Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
- Click Apply, then OK

• Reboot into SAFE MODE
To get into the Windows XP Safe Mode, restart your computer and, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times. Choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear and press Enter.

• Start HijackThis, click System Scan Only and place a checkmark next to the following items:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0F6CF10C-C696-6C4D-2AD9-04C047BD753E} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hfdvap.dll

Close ALL browsers and open windows/programs leaving just HijackThis and click 'Fix Checked'.

• Navigate to and delete the following files if present:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gzarojmp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\xvhazb.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rxmrbh.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rxmrbh.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\zhfkkx.dll

C:\Documents and Settings\Arquillo\Local Settings\Application Data\gqnxrgc.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\Arquillo\Local Settings\Application Data\ucwnvn.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\Arquillo\Local Settings\Application Data\ucwnvn.exe

• Reboot into Normal Mode

• Download and scan with CCleaner.
1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation. IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbar-free Basic or Slim versions instead of the Standard Build.
2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours
3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.
In the Windows Tab:
  • Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies.
  • Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
  • Clean all entries in the "System" section.
  • Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
  • Clean any others that you choose.
In the Applications Tab:
  • Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
  • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
  • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
  • Clean any others that you choose.
3. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
4. A pop-up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
5. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
6. Click "exit" when done.

• Download and scan with AVG Anti-Spyware v7.5
(This is Ewdio 4.0 renamed. If you already have Ewido installed, please update to this version which has a special "clean driver" for removing persistent malware)
1. After download, double click on the file to launch the install process.
2. Choose a language, click "OK" and then click "Next".
3. Read the "License Agreement" and click "I Agree".
4. Accept default installation path: C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, click "Next", then click "Install".
5. After setup completes, click "Finish" to start the program automatically or launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking its icon on your desktop or in the system tray.
6. The main "Status" menu will appear. Select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Shield' and 'Automatic Updates'.
7. Then right click on AVG Anti-Spyware in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".
8. Go to Start > Run and type: services.msc
  • Press "OK".
  • Click the "Extended tab" and scroll down the list to find AVG Anti-Spyware guard.
  • When you find the guard service, double-click on it.
  • In the Properties Window > General Tab that opens, click the "Stop" button.
  • From the drop-down menu next to "Startup Type", click on "Manual".
  • Now click "Apply", then "OK" and close the Services window.
9. Select the "Update" button and click "Start update". Wait until you see the "Update succesfull message. If you are having problems with the updater, manually update with the
AVG Anti-Spyware Full database installer from here.

Once the updates are installed do the following:
1. Click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.
  • Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.
  • Under "How to Scan?" check all (default).
  • Under "Possibly unwanted software" check all (default).
  • Under "What to Scan?" make sure "Scan every file" is selected (default).
  • Under "Reports" select "Automatically generate report after every scan" and UNcheck "Only if threats were found".
2. Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
3. Click "Complete System Scan" to start.
4. When the scan has finished you will be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.

IMPORTANT! Do not save the report before you have clicked the Apply all actions button. If you do, the log that is created will indicate "No action taken", making it more difficult to interpret the report. So be sure you save it only AFTER clicking the "Apply all actions?" button.

5. Click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans. Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt. Save to your desktop. A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports\
6. Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done and submit the log report in your next response.

Note: Close all open windows, programs, and DO NOT USE the computer while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning. If Explorer or other programs are open during the scan that means certain files will also be in use. Some malware will insert itself and hide in areas that are "protected" by Windows when the files are being used. This can hamper AVG Anti-Spyware's ability to clean properly and may result in reinfection.

• Post back with AVG Anti-Spyware's log and a new HijackThis log.
Take only memories, leave nothing but footprints.

Hi -

• Reboot into Safe Mode again. Make sure you print these directions because you will not have an Internet connection.

• Start HijackThis, click System Scan Only and place a checkmark next to the following items:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {60A37CEE-930F-5513-ACB4-02D0B4B18C2F} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jcsdnwi.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ldikbik.dll] C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ldikbik.dll,uvluzkb

Close ALL browsers and open windows/programs except HijackThis and click 'Fix Checked'.

• Navigate to and delete the following files if present:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ldikbik.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\uvluzkb.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\uvluzkb.exe

• Reboot into Normal Mode

• Since you already have the ActiveX for Panda Online Scan, perform an onlinescan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

• Post back with the results of the Panda scan and a new HijackThis log. Also, let me know how your computer is running now.
Take only memories, leave nothing but footprints.

Hi -

Panda's still showing some malware.

• Lycos has a reputation for being spyware. If you did not pay for this program, I suggest that you remove it.
- Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
- Select Lycos > click Remove
- Exit.

• Reboot into Safe Mode again. Make sure you print these directions because you will not have an Internet connection.

• Navigate to and delete the following files if present:
C:\Windows\PreProcess.data
C:\Windows\pcconfig.dat
C:\Windows\system32\mseggrpid.dll

If you uninstalled Lycos, then delete the following folder if present:
C:\Program Files\Lycos

• Reboot into Normal Mode

• You've got a lot of tracking cookies, so you need to delete those cookies set by Firefox. You also need to change your settings for cookies.
In Firefox, click Tools > Options > Privacy tab
- Click "Show Cookies" > then click "Remove All Cookies" > click "Close"
- Tick "Allow sites to set Cookies"
- From the drop-down arrow, select "ask me every time"
- Click OK
- When you are surfing and do accept cookies, choose the option "Session Only"
In Internet Explorer, click Tools -> Internet Options -> Privacy tab -> Advanced
- Tick "Override automatic cookie handling"
- Under "First-party Cookies" - tick "Prompt"
- Under "Third-party Cookies - tick "Block"
- Click OK and Apply
Rule of thumb: Don't accept cookies for every site - be selective. You can deny most cookies, and you will be blocked from most of the tracking cookies.

• Scan (hopefully) one last time with Panda and post back with the Panda log and a new HijackThis log. Also, how is your computer still running?
Take only memories, leave nothing but footprints.

Me again,
Here are the latest reports from Panda and HiJackThis. Computer seems to be running fine. I tried the thing with the cookies but I don't like having to click deny evry time I visit a page, so I guess I'll just try to delete them every time I finish using firefox, unless there is another way.
What's next?

Hi -

One leftover folder from Lycos needs to be deleted, and there's a dialer that did not get deleted and is still on your computer.

• Navigate to and delete the following folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\Arquillo\Application Data\Lycos

• Download KillBox
Click killbox.exe.
Select the option "Delete on reboot"
Click the button: All Files (!Important!)
Now it should flash green.

Now copy the following in bold print:

C:\Windows\pcconfig.dat

Open 'file' in the Killbox Menu on top and choose Paste from clipboard

Then press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it.
Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be deleted on next reboot.. Click YES
When it asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES
If you do not get that message, then just manually reboot your computer.

Your computer should reboot now.

After reboot, you will get some errors, but this is normal.

Now, run Panda and post back the results.

Hi -

Very good!

Your log looks clean.

• Please set your system to hide system files.
- Go to Start and open My Computer
- Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
- Select the View Tab and, under Hidden files and folders, check Do not show hidden files and folders
- Check Hide file extensions for known file types
- Check Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
- Click Apply, then OK.

• If you have not done so, please empty your Recycle Bin.

• Create a new Restore Point:
- Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.
- When the utility opens, select "Create a new restore point" and click Next
- Name the restore point - something like "After infection cleaned" or "After cleaning"
- Click Create.

• Delete the old Restore Points:
- Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup. Click Ok.
- Click the "More Options" tab.
- Where it states "System Restore" - click Clean up.
- All of the old Restore Points will be deleted EXCEPT for the one you just created.

Reboot your computer.

• To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

• Install Spywareblaster. SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for so-called spyware but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage. Update it periodically.

• Install IE-SPYAD puts over 20,000 sites in your restricted zone, so you will be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that are not actually innocent at all.

* Avoid illegal sites because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside pop-ups. If you should get them, use ALT + F4 to close them.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software because most of these so-called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

• Let your anti-virus and anti-spyware scanners scan frequently and don't forget to update before scanning.

• Make sure your Windows has the latest updates by going here.

• More information on how to prevent malware can be found at So how did I get infected in the first place? (by Tony Klein) and Malware Prevention: Prevent Re-infection.

Happy surfing again! :flowers:
