Hi Freshuser,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer.

You have run a McAfee online scan, but I can see no evidence that you have any full time antivirus software installed. If this is the case, you need to install an antivirus program immediately. Please download one of these free programs:

AVG Free is available at this site.

Avast Home Edition is available here.

Avira AntiVir can be downloaded here.

I personally use AVG Free, but all these programs have good reputations. If you don't like one, you can try another. Please consult the help files or online support for information on installing, updating, and using the program.

Another issue is that I see no evidence of a firewall on your computer. It is important that you use a software firewall, to prevent unauthorised traffic both out of and into your computer. I recommend you download and install one of these excellent (and free) products:

Zone Alarm

Sygate

Outpost Firewall Free

Kerio personal firewall

For more information about firewalls, please read this tutorial.

Once you have an antivirus and firewall installed, please proceed with these steps.

First let's do a HijackThis fix.

Run a HijackThis scan and check the following lines:O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [VidSvr]
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [test]
O16 - DPF: {DB893839-10F0-4AF9-92FA-B23528F530AF} - http://deposito.quickstaraccess.com/10702-76.exe
O16 - DPF: {AED98630-0251-4E83-917D-43A23D66D507} (Download Helper Class) - http://activex.microgaming.com/DLHelper/ve...n7/DLHelper.cab

Now, make sure all other windows are closed and there are no programs running minimized in your taskbar, then click Fix checked.

Now I would like you to submit a file for analysis. If you know what it is, just tell me, no need to submit it. Here is the file:

C:\WINDOWS\98SETUP.EXE

To submit, go to this webpage:

Virustotal

Near the top of the webpage there is a white text box with a Browse button, just click it and navigate to the file, select it, click Open, then back on the web page, click Send.

Virustotal puts the file in a queue and will estimate how long it should take before your file is analyzed. During the analysis you will see the report grow as the file is scanned by each of the programs.

To save the report, highlight the relevant block of text on the web page, then press <Ctrl> - C. Open Notepad and press <Ctrl> - V. Give the file a catchy name like Virustotal.txt and save it to your desktop. I need to see it.

Next I need you to run an Ad-Aware scan. If you already have the program, skip the installation step, just update it and then carry on.

Install Ad-Aware:

Download Ad-AwareSE Personal from this location. Save the file to your desktop. Double click on the icon to begin installation. Accept the defaults. When installation is complete you will be presented with a checkbox menu screen. Leave the option Check for Updates now checked, but uncheck Run a full system scan. The readme file is your choice, you can read it now or wait until later. After the program has updated, close it. Do not run it yet.

Boot into Safe Mode:
  • Restart your computer.
  • When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a menu.
  • When you have the menu on the screen. Use the arrow keys to move to the line that says Safe Mode.
  • Then press <Enter> on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.
Run Ad-Aware:

Double-click the desktop icon to open the program, then click the Scan Now bar and select the radio button Perform full system scan. Leave Check for low-risk threats selected (green) and Check for negligible risk entries unselected (red). Click Next. When the scan is finished, allow the program to fix any problems it finds, then click Show logfile, then right click on the report and select Save. Name the file and note where you save it -- the default is C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Personal. You may want to put it someplace easier to find, such as your desktop. Then close the program.

Now restart the computer, it will boot into normal mode automatically.

Open HijackThis and run a fresh scan. Post that log, along with the Ad-Aware log and the Virustotal report, to a reply here. Tell me how the computer is running now.

Dave
