Hi,

I was hijacked yesterday via the latest internet explorer flaw (the one for which an update was just released today). The virus/exploit that seems to have started it was called bloodhound.exploit.21 by my antivirus software, but for some reason instead of deleting or quarantining it the status was "left alone". I managed to get rid of the infected index files manually, but not before some malicious code had run. The code added tons of google and yahoo-related redirections to my HOSTS file, which I found and removed manually. It also made it impossible for me to enable windows automatic updates (all options are greyed out in the system/automatic updates tab). [I haven't been able to fix this one - any tips?). The code also removed the windows update website from my trusted sites list, but once I added it back I was able to download updates manually.

So, I've followed the instructions on your website and run the following programs, in this order:

CWShredder
Ad-aware SE w/latest updates
Spybot Search and Destroy
Windows Update (to get the latest updates released today)
HijackThis

I am attaching the HJT log below. I may have nabbed all the problems with the earlier steps, but I just wanted to check to see if you notice anything else in the log. Also, if you have any tips on how to re-enable automatic updates, I'm all ears. I tried following the microsoft knowledge-base instructions to enable auto updates via the group policy, and via the registry keys, but even though these are now set to "enabled" the options to autoupdate are still greyed out in the system/auto updates tab.

Thanks in advance for your help!!

-Brian

Run this registry script.
Copy the contents of the Quote box to Notepad, and save in a location of your choice as repair.reg (make sure to save as type: "All Files")

Doubleclick repair.reg, and answer 'yes' when prompted to add its contents to the Registry, then restart your computer.
