Hello,

Please make sure you follow the next instructions in exactly the way I describe without missing any step and in the right order!!

* Please download VundoFix.exe to your C:\.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • In case it says that nothing was found, Right click the list box (white box) in the main VundoFix window.
  • Select Add More Files? from the menu that comes up. This will open a new VundoFix window.
  • In the Window: copy and paste next in the first field: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\advwmi.dll
  • Copy and paste next in the second field: C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmpB3.tmp.dll
  • Click the Add Files button.
  • Click the "Close Window" button.
  • Click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

After reboot,

* Please download, install, and update AVG Anti-Spyware
  • Load AVG Anti-Spyware and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Do not run the scan yet.
* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following if still present (some entries won't be present anymore):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {57E218E6-5A80-4f0c-AB25-83598F25D7E9} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmpB3.tmp.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {c6b01115-f116-411e-8156-06378d6d3346} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\advwmi.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Lexmark_X79-55] C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsasss.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SoundService] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\gebaxv.dll",setvm
O20 - AppInit_DLLs:
O20 - Winlogon Notify: advwmi - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\advwmi.dll

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

* Start AVG Antispyware.
  • Click on the Scanner tab at the top. Click the "Settings" tab and then change the recommended action to Quarantine and click Automatically generate report after every scan. Click back to the "Scan" tab and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. AVG Anti-Spyware will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
  • Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware.
Reboot your computer.

* Download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished and after reboot (in case it asks to reboot), it should open a log, combofix.txt.

* Please download the following file to your desktop:
http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/FindAWF.exe
Run the file. This will open a log.

Post the next logs in your following reply:

* Log from AVG Antispyware
* Log from Combofix
* Log from FindAWF
* New HijackThislog

You may need more than one reply to post the logs.

Hi,

I see the AWF infection is already dead... and some files are replaced properly again. However, we have to replace some files again to their original location. To do this, please follow my next steps in the right order..

* Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox in it:

copy /y "C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\1.2.1128.5462\bak\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe" "C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\1.2.1128.5462"
copy /y "C:\Program Files\acer\eRecovery\bak\Monitor.exe" "C:\Program Files\acer\eRecovery"
copy /y "C:\Program Files\Launch Manager\bak\QtZgAcer.EXE" "C:\Program Files\Launch Manager"
copy /y "C:\Program Files\Arcade\bak\PCMService.exe" "C:\Program Files\Arcade"
copy /y "C:\WINDOWS\system32\bak\keyhook.exe" "C:\WINDOWS\system32"
del /y "C:\WINDOWS\system32\bak\svehost.exe"

Save this as replace.bat , choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
(In case you are unsure how to create a bat file, take a look here with screenshots.)
Doubleclick replace.bat you created previously.

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Under Browsing History, click "Delete".
  • Click "Delete Files", "Delete cookies" and "Delete history"
  • Click Close below.
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu..
  • Click the Clear now button below.. A new window will popup what to clear.
  • Select all and click the Clear button again.
  • Click OK to close the Options window
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
Reboot back to normal mode.

* download http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf and place it on desktop
right click the file and select install, that will reset the zone settings that have been altered

and also

* Download: ResetProtocolDefaults.reg
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/ResetProtocolDefaults.reg

Locate "ResetProtocolDefaults.reg"
Right-click and select: Merge (Ok the prompt)

Rescan with FindAWF and post the log in your next reply.

Hello,

Almost done.

Since we replaced the files successfully, please delete next bak-folders:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\bak
C:\Program Files\Messenger\bak
C:\Program Files\Arcade\bak
C:\Program Files\Launch Manager\bak
C:\WINDOWS\ime\imjp8_1\bak
C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\bak
C:\Program Files\acer\eRecovery\bak
C:\WINDOWS\system32\IME\PINTLGNT\bak
C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\1.2.1128.5462\bak

Also, since I asked you in my previous post to uninstall older versions of Sun java and install the latest version, delete next folder as well:

C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_10

Let me know in your next reply how things are now.

Hi miekiemoes,

i have deleted all the files you asked me to and things seem to be running well. There was another bak file i noticed it is;
C:\WINDOWS\system32\IME\TINTLGNT

should i delete this file to?

The pop-ups have stopped and Darksma doesn't show up in yahoo anti-spy. Thanks for all of your help, but i do have a few questions, can i delete the programs you asked me to download in your earlier posts? also when i removed some infected programs using the house call website i started getting this message from norton av, and its really annoying  , it reads Nortan AntiVirus 2005 was unable to start the instant messenger scanner. It will be unable to scan instant Messenger downloads for infections. Do you have any idea what i can do to stop this message from popping up? Also, im curious as to where i might have gotten this virus/trojan from, any ideas?

thanks,
seth

Hi,

Yes, delete the bak-folder present in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\IME\TINTLGNT - folder. I overlooked that one previously, thought it was the same folder as C:\WINDOWS\system32\IME\PINTLGNT (one letter difference).

Yes, you may delete the programs I asked you to use previously.
Concerning your Norton, seems like this is a very common problem with Norton. This is a quote I found on another forum here:

Anyway, I wrote to Symantec, and a support person replied after two days. His first explanation was that NAV 2005 is not compatible with some Instant Messenger applications. It includes MSN Messenger with a version lower than 6.0. I explained to him that I have the latest version, 6.2. After a little back and forth conversation, he came up with a Symantec site that directly related to this annoying pop-up error 3021.4. And there was the solution: I had to disable the scanning of anything transmitted with MSN Messenger.

In anyway, uninstall your Norton and reinstall it again, because the infection you were dealing with could have corrupted some Norton related components.
Also, 2005 is quite an old version. It has been updated, also to fix some bugs and compatibility problems.

I also found the exact problem you are having, but in german (I couldn't find the english translation present of it):
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/INTER...16?OpenDocument
Basically, what it says there is that you have to update your Norton to the latest version.

Hi,

sorry i think i spoke too soon, i went to double check darksma was gone but its still there sad.gif , if it helps any the location yahoo anti-spy gives is:

hkey_local_machine \software\microsoft\dinf

So why isn't Yahoo Antispy deleting it?

to delete it,

Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox below in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\dinf]

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.
(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here with screenshots.)

Ah, so it was already preinstalled on that laptop - old version though. How long is the subscription still?

Anyway, what you can also do here is install another Antivirus if you want.
There are a lot of free ones out there which are great. For example, Avira is a great Antivirus. It doesn't need as much resources as Norton does, it is great in detection and removal. You can find the downloadlink in my signature under AntiVirus Scanners.

Keep in mind, if you decide to install another Antivirus, you should uninstall your Norton.
In case you're having problems with uninstalling it (which is a very common issue), To fully remove Norton AntiVirus, you should go here and download the files and print the instructions for removal, and follow them after uninstalling NAV:
How to uninstall Norton AntiVirus 2003/2004/2005/2006/2007 (note: this removes ALL Norton 2003/2004/2005/2006/2007 products from your computer)
How to uninstall Norton AntiVirus 2000/2001/2002

Also read this article in case you're having problems with uninstalling Norton if above instructions didn't work, or noticed problems after uninstalling Norton:
http://basconotw.mvps.org/SymRem.htm

Ofcourse the choice is yours if you want to keep this preinstalled version of Norton or not.

The regfix I posted previously should get rid of the leftover in the registry related with darksma.

hey,

Actually, the laptop was never used. He had bought it for recreational uses but got caught up in work and just ended up buying a top of the line alien ware desk top, he asked if i was interested in buying it so i did. The subscription is set to expire in 30 days. About a week ago i had picked up norton 06 and was planning on installing that after the subscription for this one expires.

I am pretty satisfied with norton at the moment, i had a friend suggest getting spysweeper as my main spyware program, do you know anything about this program, is it worth paying $20 for, or are there better cheaper anti-spyware programs?

I don't believe you answered my other question so I'll ask again, where might i have picked up Darksma. Could it have come from downloading songs from limewire? or visiting websites that were infected?

Thanks again,

Seth

Hi,

Since the subscription expires within 30 days anyway, it's indeed a good idea to update Norton. By the way, why not the 2007 version, which improved a lot since the 2006 version.

Yes, Spysweeper is a good Antispywarescanner. But you can use the trial first before you're planning to purchase it. There are also a lot free Antispyware scanners as well which are very good. You can find them also in my signature (those are the ones I recommend).

Yes, overlooked your previous question.
In most cases, Darksma + the other infections you were dealing with get downloaded and installed via "illegal" sites. In most cases these are crack/keygen/warez/porn and some games sites.
One single click there can already download and install a huge malware bundle and your Antivirus won't always prevent this. Once installed, it may disable your realtime scanners and download and install more malware.

That's why - always be careful.

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.

hi,

When i went to the store i didn't see the 07 version so i assumed it wasn't out yet. I haven't opened the package yet so i can just return it and exchange it for the 07 version. And thanks for the info, pretty sure i haven't visited those kind of websites, but i do share this computer with my brother so ill have to get after him to make sure this doesn't happen again.

Thanks again for all your help and speedy replies,

Seth
