Hello TYam,

Sorry for the delay, this forum is very busy right now.

You are running HijackThis from a temporary folder. Please install a copy in its own folder, as follows:First, delete the HijackThis .zip file currently on your computer.

Then, download the self-extracting installation file here. Save it to your desktop.

Next, double-click the HijackThis_SFX.exe file icon. A window will open. Accept the default installation folder by clicking Unzip on the right side of the window.

Navigate to the program by double clicking My Computer, C:, Program Files. Find the HijackThis folder and double-click it to open.

If you would like to make a shortcut for your Desktop so it's more easily accessible, right click the HijackThis icon (it looks like a detonator with some dynamite sticks) and choose Send To > Desktop (create shortcut) .
Once you have HijackThis in its own folder, please run a fresh scan and post the log to a reply here. Before you copy and paste the log into Notepad, click the Format button and make sure that Word Wrap is Unchecked. Word wrap puts blank lines in the log which make it difficult to read.

Also, I have a question. You say you visited a website with a "poster" -- is this the same as a banner ad? -- telling you to change all your passwords and that "a message just popped up saying my computer is not fully detected" -- did it say detected or protected?

And most important -- did you click on anything in that banner ad or that popup window?

Looking forward to your reply.

Dave

This was not a banner ad. It was a website called alluc redirected me to. In the bottom there was a thing that was setup like a forum where someone on the bottom of the page warned me there might be a virus saying i should change all my passwords. And sorry about my typo, it said protected.

One last thing, mcafee detected something on my computer saying it has blocked out something called js/downloader. I only get this message when I am using internet explorer though.

okay.. well thanks for your help too

ooh yeah... about the js/downloader.. when i scan my computer it says nothing about the js/downloader so does that mean that it has never entered my computer and that mcafee has blocked it from entering my computer?

Hello,

It was a website called alluc redirected me to.

Sorry but this is confusing to me. Is Alluc the website you were redirected to, or the website that did the redirect?

If Alluc redirected you, did you click on anything (like an ad) before being redirected?

Another question. Was the McAfee warning from the firewall or from the Antivirus? If it happens again, please write down the entire message and post it in your next reply.

Advice: If Alluc (or any other website) is redirecting you without your permission, don't go there!

Let's update your Java and do a couple of other things to see if we can turn up anything on your computer.

You need to update your Java. Earlier versions have serious security vulnerabilities. Click Start, Control Panel, then double click Add/Remove Programs. When the list is populated look for any and all entries starting with J2SE or JRE with the little Java icon (a coffee cup). Remove them all, one by one. Then open your browser and go to this web page to get the latest version. Scroll dow to the middle of the page where you will find Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6. Click Download which will take you to the secure download page. At the top, select the Accept License Agreement button. Then look to the first block for the J2SE downloads for the Windows Platform. You can choose either the Online or Offline installation version; unless you have several computers you need to upgrade, I suggest the Online version.

Download the file to your desktop, close your browser, and double click the file icon to begin installation.

If you have trouble with the Online installation, you can download the big Offline file and install it with your browser closed.

Next, install AVG-Antispyware: Open your browser and go to This page. Read the information regarding the paid and free versions of the program, then at the bottom of the page click the orange box labeled Download Now. Save the AVG-AS setup file to your desktop. Close your browser.

Double click the AVGAS setup icon. Unless you need to change the language first, click OK, then Next.

On the License agreement screen click I Agree. Then accept the default installation folder by clicking Next.

Finally, click Install. The program will then copy files and register itself; when it tells you it is installed, click Finish.

AVG-AS 7.5 will open. On the Status screen you will see a line Last Update ! Never. On that line click Update Now.

After the program updates, you may want to change the Auto Updates options. The default is to check for updates every 60 minutes, which you may feel is excessive. Note that after the 30 day trial period, Auto Updates is disabled unless you pay for the program.

Now click the Scanner icon at the top of the window. Click the Settings tab. When that screen opens select the radio button Automatically produce a report after every scan. Uncheck the box Only if threats were found.

On the same screen, under "How to Act", click on Recommended Actions. Select Quarantine.

Leave the other settings on that screen at their defaults.

Close the program. This will save the settings changes. Do not run a scan yet.
Now, Boot into Safe Mode.

If you don't know how to do this, here are two ways:

F8 Method
  • Restart your computer.
  • When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a menu.
  • When you have the menu on the screen. Use the arrow keys to move to the line that says Safe Mode.
  • Then press <Enter> on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.
Bootsafe utility

If the F8 method does not work, you can download this program: Bootsafe.exe. Download the .exe file (not the zip file) directly to your desktop, it requires no installation. To use it, double click the program icon, then select the radio button Safe Mode - Minimal and click on the Reboot button.

In Safe Mode, scan with AVG AntiSpyware:Double click the AVG-AS 7.5 icon on your desktop to start the program

Unless you have already updated today, update the definitions.

Click the Scan tab. When the screen opens, select Complete System Scan. This action will take some time.

When the scan is finished, scroll through the list. Except for cookies, which should be set to Delete, every item should be set to Quarantine. If this is not the case, change it.

Now click Apply All Actions. Then click Save Report. On the screen that opens, click Save Report As, and in the Report save as... window navigate to and select your Desktop. You may want to rename the report file to something such as AVGAS_scan01.txt that will make it easier to recognize.

Close the program.
Now, Reboot back into normal mode:

If you used the F8 method, Windows should automatically reboot into normal mode when you restart it. If you used Bootsafe, open the program and select the Normal Mode radio button, then click Reboot.

Next order of business is to run an online scan. You will need to use Internet Explorer for this.

First go to the Kaspersky online scanner. Accept the terms, let it install an ActiveX program (since you have XP SP2 this is blocked by default, you must allow it), then accept the terms again, let it download the files (about 8 MB total). Click Next, and select "My Computer" as the scan area. Kaspersky takes a long time but it is very thorough. When it is finished, save the report as a text file (easier to work with than an HTML file) to your desktop.

Finally, run another HijackThis scan. Copy and paste the HJT log, Kaspersky report, and AVGAS report into a reply to this topic. Also, please answer my questions.

Hi again,

I am very happy to know that your computer was not infected. Your log did not show any signs of it.

Best of luck and cheers for your uncle.

Dave
