Hi.

Below is the HJT log of my brother's girlfriend's laptop. It's recently gotten infected with some baddies (mostly trojans ; as detected by Kaspersky online scan: Trojan-Spy.Win32.Banbra.lp / AdTool.Win32.MyWebSearch / Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Banload.bkh / Trojan-Spy.Win32.Banker.di / Trojan-Proxy.Win32.Horst.xc ; as detected by Panda ActiveScan: Trj/Banker.GOO / Trj/Nabload.ARA / Application/MyWebSearch / Trj/Rizalof.VN ; the rest of the logs I do not have them here at hand, if needed for your reference, please let me know).

To keep a long story short I've ran a handful of scanners (Ad-Aware / SpyBot / AVG Anti-Spyware all of which run in Safe Mode + the online scans Panda ActiveScan / eTrust / F-Secure) which seemingly pretty much got it rid of all junk. (Also, afterwards, I've either uninstalled/installed/re-installed/updated a few programs, per request of the owner of the laptop. As well I've reset System Restore.) Final scans on re-run of Ad-Aware / SpyBot / AVG Anti-Spyware / Panda ActiveScan / Kaspersky Online Scan all came clean.

Now I would very much appreciate if you could please just review the final HJT log just to double check whether there's any remainder in there which needs to be fixed?... (I'm mostly wondering about entry O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PelSetupRun] E:\setup.exe. Note that E:\ is the DVD drive.) For comparison terms I'm also adding the preliminar HJT log taken before proceeding with the cleanup with those scanners as mentioned above.

This is no urgent case (as also the laptop isn't here at the moment anyways). I'd really just appreciate your analysis of the log for the sake of a rested conscience.

Thank you so much for your time and help. :flowers:

P.S. You may note that there is currently no firewall running (no other than XP's own one). And yes, while I absolutely understand the need to have a firewall running, as also I have made the owner of the laptop aware of the fact, however, as she's not too comfortable with the English language, she decided not to install one for the moment, as she is afraid she won't know how to handle with it... I'll try to revert this, hopefully...

Hello, from the latest Hijackthislog, check and fix next entries:

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: GamesBar - {6F282B65-56BF-4BD1-A8B2-A4449A05863D} - C:\Program Files\GamesBar\oberontb.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PelSetupRun] E:\setup.exe
<== this is not malicious, but not needed to startup with windows.

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Delete next folders:

C:\Program Files\GamesBar
C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch

The rest of the log looks ok

Hi miekiemoes, thank you for the quick reply.

I'll do according to your instructions as soon as my bro has the chance to bring the laptop back for this final fix.

I'm only somewhat in doubt with regards to these two entries, however:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

As I could check, seems {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} is to be related with Windows Live Messenger (http://www.castlecops.com/tk32132-htc_8_1_0178_00_dll.html), and alcmtr.exe with Realtek (http://www.processlibrary.com/directory?files=alcmtr.exe), thus I wonder, should I get those entries fixed nonetheless, yes? (I mean, that won't have any implication to the respective programs, won't cause anything legit to malfunction nor anything, or?...) Thanks so much if you can please just confirm this for me.

And thanks again, for the prompt help! :flowers:

Hi,

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

This is a leftover, the related file is not present anymore, so it's just an orphaned key. That's why you may fix it in HijackThis.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

When you fix that entry, it will only delete the startup reference, so it won't startup with Windows. ALCMTR.EXE is ok, but it is known as a resource hog and it spies as well: http://www.castlecops.com/s5306-ALCMTR_EXE.html
That's why I do not recommend that it starts up with Windows.

It won't affect anything.

Hi again miekiemoes, thanks for confirming that for me.

And so if everything else in the log is ok, if you do see it fit then, I guess you may close this topic now; for my part, yes. (If by any chance for some reason anything happens to go wrong when I later apply those fixes, I'll ask you to please re-open it.)

Once more, thank you greatly for your time and assistance. :flowers:
