I'm trying to remove some programs to help clean up my computer and I went into Add/Remove programs to delete things like windows live messenger and anything aol related. Also I am wondering this report produces any spyware/malware? First thing I want to do is to clean up these files and then hopefully check and remove some spyware. Any help will be appreciated...thanks.

Hi,

I also want to remove McAfee everything on here, and I was wondering if I could do that using hijackthis?

No, that's not the way to remove a program. Hijackthis mainly deletes registry keys and disables services.
If you want to get rid of McAfee, you should uninstall it via add/remove programs.
Also, I notice from your log that you are also having Symantec/Norton Antivirus.
Never install more than one Antivirus and Firewall! Rather than giving you extra protection, it will decrease the reliability of it seriously!
The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Also because more than one Antivirus and Firewall installed are not compatible with eachother, it can cause system performance problems and a serious system slowdown.

In case you're having problems with uninstalling McAfee,

* Download and run the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR.exe).
Running the McAfee Consumer Product Removal tool (MCPR.exe) removes all 2005, 2006, and 2007 versions of McAfee consumer products.
  • McAfee Security Center
  • McAfee VirusScan
  • McAfee Personal Firewall Plus
  • McAfee Privacy Service
  • McAfee SpamKiller
  • McAfee Wireless Network Security
  • McAfee SiteAdvisor
  • McAfee Data Backup
  • McAfee Network Manager
  • McAfee Easy Network
  • McAfee AntiSpyware
Download the removal tool from http://download.mcafee.com/products/licens...atches/MCPR.exe
  • Click Save and save the file to any folder on the computer.
  • Navigate to the folder where the file is saved.
  • Double-click MCPR.exe.
  • Click Run. A Command Line window will be displayed, and then close automatically. Wait for a second Command Line window to be displayed.
Note: Do not double-click MCPR.exe again, you may have to wait up to 1 minute for the next window to appear.
After the second window appears, the program will begin the cleanup.
  • Observe the installation, which could take several minutes. The following message will be displayed in the Command Line window:
The machine must reboot to complete the un-installation. Reboot now? [y.n]
  • Press Y on the keyboard.
  • Wait for the computer to restart.
All McAfee products are now removed from your computer.
These McAfee removal instructions can be found at http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/faq3.asp?docid=408302

I see you have Viewpoint installed...
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
Check and fix next entry in HijackThis (which is the only bad one present, the rest looks ok):

O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsearch.com/menusearch.html...US_ZCxdm408YYUS

And as a sidenote, Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.

Ok...I have completed what you said. Now I would like to remove these items in add/remove programs:
Canon Camera Window
Canon Camera Window --> both of them
My Way Search Assistant
Windows Live Toolbar

I cannot remove these from the add/remove programs menu. I'll also post another hijack this log for you

Your log looks ok.

I cannot remove these from the add/remove programs menu.

Does it give any errors when you are trying to uninstall?

Concerning next:

Canon Camera Window
Canon Camera Window --> both of them
My Way Search Assistant

I don't think they are still present and installed, so these entries may be just leftovers in the registry.

However, I do still see Windows Live Toolbar installed, so what error are you getting when you try to uninstall it? Have you been fixing entries in HijackThis related with Windows Live Toolbar previously, before you tried to uninstall it?
Please keep in mind, after you uninstall programs, you should reboot your computer.

In regards to the cannon programs it gives me about 7 popups complaining about Strings not beinng found and then the last one says IDS_ERROR_71 and then I get a window that says maintanence complete error complete and then it still shows up on there. The My Way Search Assistant program does not have a remove button or a change/remove button at all. The windows live toolbar, when i hit remove it says the installer has an error with the package and then bugs out. I have not done anything with hijackthis and windows live messenger. I do see some items related to it though on the log, but i have not done anything with them.

Regards,
Michael

Hi,

As I already said, concerning My Way searchassistant and Canon, you get this when related files are already removed, which means the program is not present there anymore, only the leftover in the registry pointing to add/remove programs.

For Windows Live Toolbar, you can delete this one manually via Hijackthis. To do this, Open HijackThis and check and fix next entries:

O2 - BHO: Windows Live Toolbar Helper - {BDBD1DAD-C946-4A17-ADC1-64B5B4FF55D0} - C:\Program Files\Windows Live Toolbar\msntb.dll
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Windows Live Search - res://C:\Program Files\Windows Live Toolbar\msntb.dll/search.htm
O8 - Extra context menu item: Add to Windows &Live Favorites - http://favorites.live.com/quickadd.aspx
O8 - Extra context menu item: Open in new background tab - res://C:\Program Files\Windows Live Toolbar\Components\en-us\msntabres.dll.mui/229?607856896241414287f0df8f36318ff5
O8 - Extra context menu item: Open in new foreground tab - res://C:\Program Files\Windows Live Toolbar\Components\en-us\msntabres.dll.mui/230?607856896241414287f0df8f36318ff5

Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you Hit Fix checked.

Then delete this folder:
C:\Program Files\Windows Live Toolbar

To delete the leftovers from add/remove programs,
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the "Config..." button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on the Box that says "Uninstall Manager"
  • Select next entries:
    • Canon Camera Window
    • My Way Search Assistant
    • Windows Live Toolbar
  • Click on Delete this entry
  • Click "Yes"
Do not do this when you want to uninstall programs. This method is only when programs are already gone, but the uninstall registry entry remains.
