Hi, I believe that somehow I may have gotten a keylogger installed on my system. AVG has found and "fixed" Logger.Goldun.kd or Logger.Goldun.pa at least 3 times in the past week which leads me to believe that I'm picking it back up every time I log back in. Here's my latest HJT log and I can post an AVG log too if that is of benefit. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello,

Download haxfix.exe.
Save it to your desktop.
Double click on haxfix.exe to install haxfix. (standard installation path is c:\program Files\haxfix)
Checkmark "Create a desktop icon".
Click "Next".
When the installation is completed, make sure that the checkmark "Launch HaxFix" is placed.
Click "Finish".
A red "dos window" (dos box) will open.
Select option 1. Make logfile by typing 1 and then pressing Enter.
Haxfix will start scanning the computer. When it is finished a logfile will open.
Copy the contents of that logfile and paste it into this thread together with a new HijackThislog

Hi,

I don't know what happened with your running processes in HijackThis, but that's not such a big deal.

Do next please..

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following if still present (some entries won't be present anymore):

R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: Shell Browser Object Class - {00534B55-3155-CA4F-B41D-0E922121D03C} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\browsemu.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {f0951fc6-e018-4970-85af-ca4bba523096} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\igftuq.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: dvb03a - dvb03a.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: igftuq - igftuq.dll (file missing)

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

* Open the folder program files\haxfix and double click on fix.bat (or double click on fix.bat desktop icon)
Close all other open windows since this step requires a reboot.

Select option 2. Run auto fix by typing 2, and then pressing Enter.
If an infection is found, you'll get a message to close all other open windows.
Close them, except the red dos window from haxfix and then press Enter.
The computer will reboot.
After reboot a logfile will open.
Post the contents of that logfile along with a new hijackthislog.

Hello,

Check and fix next entry in HijackThis again:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: igftuq - igftuq.dll (file missing)

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
Then perform a full scan with your Antivirus to get rid of the leftovers if still present.

Also, most important thing of all, change all your passwords, because they are known.

Let me know in your next reply how things are now.

Here's the log from AVG after performing all actions. Notice that it still found Logger.Goldun.pa hanging around as well as a couple other thing that weren't there a few days ago. Any advice on what next?

Hi,

Yes, that's why I asked you to run this scan to get rid of the leftovers.
Your AVG Antispyware was able to clean them.
By the way, I actually asked to perform a scan with your Antivirus - which is Trendmicro in your case to get rid of the leftovers as well. But you've scanned with AVG Antispyware instead.

As a final step, do next..

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Under Browsing History, click "Delete".
  • Click "Delete Files", "Delete cookies" and "Delete history"
  • Click Close below.
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu..
  • Click the Clear now button below.. A new window will popup what to clear.
  • Select all and click the Clear button again.
  • Click OK to close the Options window
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
Let me know how things are running now, because you forgot to answer that previously

Thanks, I performed those final steps. I used AVG instead of TrendMicro as TrendMicro is our corporate Antivirus and I actually forgot that it was even there. Hopefully I achieved the same result regardless of which tool I used. I will ensure that TrendMicro runs as well just to be certain.

Things are running fine and in fact they always were. Performance hasn't been the issue for me - only the fact that I found this keylogger after someone was able to actually steal a small amount of money from me electronically. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how to monitor for that short of having something like that happen to me. I'm pretty careful with this specific computer (my home one is another story...) so that's why it surprised me that I had a keylogger on this one. Anyway, I'll keep an eye out and ensure that logger.goldun doesn't continue to lurk. Thanks.

I am sorry to hear that you had to find out you were dealing with Haxdoor, after the stealing was done.
In anyway, as I said previously, make sure you change your passwords. If you already changed them previously while this infection was still present, they are known as well. So now since it is gone, it's ok to change them again.

Yes, this malware ran stealth, this to prevent scanners finding and deleting it.
However, most scanners should be able to detect some parts of it, which already should give you a clue. I am sorry to hear you had to find out the hard way.

This malware gets installed in 80% of the cases via mails. Most probably you opened an attachement, thinking it was a genuine mail and your Antivirus didn't recognise the attachement as malicious. So make sure your Antivirus is always up to date.

Or, in some cases, this one gets installed via questionable sites as well, for example crack/keygen/warez sites. So always be careful where you surf.

Glad I could help. :flowers:

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.

Happy Surfing again!
