Hello -

Here is my sad story. I have been cleaning up myold computer to give to my daughter-in-law. We put a new copy of Registry Easy on it and cleaned up a lot of old junk. We defragged the disc and compressed the files. Then we upgraded Windows XP to SP2 and further upgraded it to included all of the security updates. I upgraded to IE7.0. The little machine was looking just great when I ran Registry easy ONE MORE TIME. Just to make sure everything was clean, when it was done, I THOUGHT I was deleting the log files, when this is the file name that I deleted: "Backup_20070321_125556.reg" Never asked me if I was sure that was what I wanted to do - just deleted it. And, of course, in my neat anal way, I emptied the trash. Now, my clean little computer will not boot. I tried the F8 key and have tried every option they have. I just know if I could get to the Help Center, I could restore it to a previous date, but I'm lost. Could you offer me some advice please?

Nothing like crashing a computer that you've spent 2 days cleaning to bring about a little humility!

Hello,

I know that feeling all to well, but the feeling that you get when you fix the system is a million times better. Could you go into some more detail? what happens when you press the power button? are there any error messages that are displayed?
Regards,

Alan.

Surely.
When it powers up and I've entere the "DOS" world, it gives me the 4 choices. Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Line and reconfigure using last known working settings. No matter which one I select, it runs for about 30 seconds, shows the "COMPAQ" insignia and then goes back to the "DOS" screen. I get brief flashes of something behind but nothing will come up. This one really stumps me - and I thought I was fairly skilled at this stuff!

In that case, you have a few options,

1 make a bootable cd, use to boot the computer and attempt a repair. http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navc...4&q=boot+cd

2 perform a repair install of windows http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

hope this helps
Regards,

Alan.

Hi there nigglesnush85! (Boy, there has got to be SOME story behind that logon!)

Thanks for you suggestions! I went to both those websites and decided I didn't have enough gray matter left tonight to try building my own bootable disc or slipstream one, but tomorrow might be another story! I'll let you know how I do!
