I'm helping with a friend's computer. This log may be a challenge. The computer is extremely slow to boot up. Currently the desktop is all white with writing that says restore my active desktop. When I try to restore it nothing happens. My friend has also been complaining of popups. Any help would be appreciated. Here is my hijack this log.

Hi,

The forums are really busy, that explains why logs get behind. If you still need some help, please start with posting a new hijackthislog in this thread. Don't start with a new thread.
Then I'll take a look.

Hello,

I can't see anything suspicious in this log - only some orphaned entries and some remarks I have..

First of all, I see Ewido installed. This version is outdated. The new version is called AVG Antispyware now. That's why I suggest you uninstall Ewido.

Secondly, I notice that you have Weatherbug installed on your computer This is very much an ad-enabled application which in addition to providing current outdoor temperature information in the System Tray together with real-time weather alerts can also draw unwanted ads and popups to your computer.

Our recommendation would be to uninstall it using the Add or Remove Programs feature in Control Panel in case you didn't purchase it.

If you want a program which provides weather information there is an ad-free alternative to Weatherbug called WeatherWatcher which is available free from http://www.snapfiles.com/get/weatherwatcher.html.

Of course this remains entirely your choice, but please be aware that if you decide to continue using Weatherbug, your computer will be at an increased risk of infection from malware.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Weather] C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe 1
<<== in case you uninstalled Weatherbug.

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

What Panda finds are only cookies and a registry key. To get rid of the registry key,

Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox below in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Stats\{00A6FAF1-072E-44cf-8957-5838F569A31D}]

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.
(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here with screenshots.)

The computer seems to have sped up a bit but it is still sluggish signing on and during some tasks. I have used msconfig and cut off a lot of things but it is still slow. Could AOL security center be causing this? It has virus scan, spyware program, firewall, anti phish....etc..... I also noticed that I can't sign on to internet explorer.....it seems to want me to sign on to aol.

Hi,

Not sure if you read my page I gave you previously about slow computers. Because, especially Point 2: 2. Don't install more than one Antivirus and Firewall with Realtime Protection enabled.

You already have McAfee, so you have to make a decision here. Because your AOL Security contains a firewall as well and it wouldn't suprise me it is causing this - as you also suspect.
Try uninstalling the AOL Security Center and keep only one Firewall and Antivirus.

I did read your post but I'm a little confused with their programs. I wasn't sure if the mcafee was part of their aol security center.....now that I know that they are separate I will get rid of one or the other....thank you...fredg

Hang on, yes, you may be right - in this case, it may be a part the "AOL security Center" here, using the McAfee software.
Well, since you're having problems with it anyway, you can uninstall it and reinstall another alternative instead.
Also, it is a known fact that McAfee may slow down computers a lot.

There are a lot of free and great alternatives out there. For example, Avira is a great Antivirus and is FREE, and Kerio or Comodo are great free Firewalls.
You can find the downloadlinks in my signature below (Antivirus - Firewalls)
