I use the program "Powerstrip" to run a custom resolution of 1440x900 to my Hanns-G HW191D monitor. Here's my problem.

I accidently changed the refresh rate yesterday to 85 htz, at which point the monitor blacked out and said "Input signal out of range".

I can't see the screen to change the settings back. now typically, I would go into safe mode, and restore the system restore to a previous point, which I have done in the past. But for some reason now, there are no previous restore points to go back to. I know I just installed some system update thing yesterday, and I assume this has erased my restore points? I dont know why it would though..

So I dont know how I can restore the settings of Powerstrip so that I can view my monitor. I've tried uninstalling the program in safe mode, and it still says input signal out of range when I restart normally. I've tried everything I can think of, if anyone has any ideas i'd appreciate it greatly. Thanks

John

Try this:
Go into Safe Mode.
How to start Windows in Safe Mode
Control Panel / Appearance and Themes / Display / Settings tab / Advanced button / Monitor tab
Set the Screen refresh rate: to 60.
Apply / OK
Reboot, and see if that works.

when I click on the "monitor" tab, the properties button is gray and I cannot click on it. The screen refresh rate tab says "use hardware default setting" and that is the only option. I can't really do anything in the monitor tab, so that won't work for now. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Did you try "use hardware default setting"?
If not, give it a try.

What version of Windows are you using?

The button to change the refresh rate setting was also gray and unclickable, even with the default monitor setting selected.

I am using XP home

I might have a fix for you, but before I try it, I wanted to get a second opinion.
I've PM'd another member about this, requesting some information.
He's not logged in right now, so if you can hold on for a little while, I'll get back to you as soon as possible.
Hopefully, with a solution.

Ok, thanks. I have my laptop, which is good, but still that PC has my life on it! :-) Someone suggested I uninstall my video drivers or something, but i'll wait for a few days to do that.

Thanks to TG and Bobbi Flekman, who guided me through the fix via pms, my problem was solved by editing the registry.

Now my problem is, how to get back to the 1440x900 resolution that the powerstrip provided me. Does anyone understand the program? I don't want to screw anything up again. Thanks

Glad to hear your problem is partially sorted johnhudson! Unfortunately I've not used the program so I am unaware of its features.

Is it important for you to use Powerstrip? Especially if this kind of error occurs again. Couldn't you use the software/applications that come with the card to alter settings?

my video card is 5 years old, and cannot produce the necessary resolution to fit the 19" widescreen monitor correctly....so right now everything looks odd because of the incorrect resolution.
