Hi goat199,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer.

Sorry for the delay, this forum has been swamped recently.

In your latest log, It appears that you have two antivirus scanners running -- AVG and Norton/Symantec. This does not make you safer. The two scanners will fight against each other and cause srashes and system instability. You should uninstall (remove) one of these programs immediately. If you have a paid-up subscription to Norton I suggest you keep it and remove AVG. If your Norton subscription has expired, remove it and keep AVG -- an Antivirus that is not up-to-date is useless.

It is quite possible that the warning popups you have been getting are caused by the two antivirus programs. They may be seeing each other as viruses -- this happens fairly often, because in fact virus scanners do behave in a similar way to viruses.

I also see several antispyware programs -- Spybot Search & Destroy, Windows Defender, Spyware Terminator, and AVG Antispyware. One does not have its real-time protection running, that's Spybot. Two do -- AVG Antispyware and Spyware Terminator. One I am not sure about -- Windows Defender. You should check and see whether its real-time scanner is working or not.

Spyware Terminator is no longer considered a "rogue" program (see the note on it near the bottom of this page ) but I still consider it less capable than the others. You can decide whether it is worth keeping on your system.

You should only have one real-time antispyware "guard" program running at a time. Pick which one you want to keep as your real-time scanner, and disable the real-time feature of the other programs. If you need help with this, just ask.

I don't see a software firewall in your log. Are you at least either (1) connected to the internet through a hardware router or (2) running Windows XP built-in firewall? Two-way software firewalls are better because they will alert you to unauthorized outgoing traffic (as when a trojan gets on your system and attempts to "phone home") as well as incoming traffic. For more about firewalls read this tutorial.

Anyway, as far as security goes, that about does it for my recommendations. I don't see any evidence of malware in your log. If you could post the exact popup messages you are getting -- perhaps post a screenshot, there's a tutorial on how to do that here -- then I can evaluate whether more scans might be advisable, but it looks like you have done quite a few online scans already.

Regarding your System Restore problem, I would refer you to the Windows XP forum. I don't use System Restore myself (I use Acronis TrueImage) and some of the folks on that forum could advise you better than I can about troubleshooting it.

Please post back with the details about those popups.

Dave
