Can I use an original XP CD to do a repair on a system that has since had service pack 2 installed? I thought I'd try a repair of Windows before a doing a reinstall.

Yes you can. You just need to install SP2 again after the repair. Download SP2 and save it somewhere before you do the repair - then install SP2 BEFORE connecting to the internet to prevent getting infected.

The other thing you can do is slipstream a SP2 XP disk.

If you want to do "Inplace Upgrade", "Slipstreaming CD" is necessary.
To create it, you can also use this software(nLite).
