I have a Toshiba satellite laptop model 1955, running Windows XP Home with sp2 and all the updates. Whenever I start up Windows I get the message "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services encountered a problem and needed to close."

The error signature is:

EventType : BEX P1 : svchost.exe P2 : 5.1.2600.2180 P3 : 41107ed6
P4 : unknown P5 : 0.0.0.0 P6 : 00000000 P7 : 00aa96bc
P8 : c0000005 P9 : 00000008

Files included in the error report to Microsoft (which never answers) are:

C:\DOCUME~1\ELEANO~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERc87e.dir00\svchost.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\ELEANO~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERc87e.dir00\appcompat.txt

I keep getting this message unless I kill the dumprep routine in Task Manager.

I have Norton Antivirus running all the time and it says I am virus-free. I also have their Internet Security package and use their firewall. I have run Spybot Search and Destroy as well as Ad-Aware and seem to have no spyware that can be detected by those programs. I also periodically run Norton SystemWorks and their one button checkup. I generally run CrapCleaner every day. I have recently run the disk optimizer in Norton, and am quite defragmented.

This problem has been going on for months. The main thing I notice is a general slowing of applications, the MS search routine, the little flashlight that comes on when you want to leave the default folder for the desktop or something.

Event viewer seems to see the same problem. It says under System:

The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
PptIRDA

The source is Service Conrol Manager and the event ID is 7026.

There is also an Application error under event viewer, Category 100, event ID 1004 with the following text:

Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00aa96bc.

Data under Bytes looks like this:
0000: 41 70 70 6c 69 63 61 74 Applicat
0008: 69 6f 6e 20 46 61 69 6c ion Fail

0048: 73 65 74 20 30 30 61 61 set 00aa
0050: 39 36 62 63 96bc

I have also googled the various error messages. One other person had 0x00aa96bc fault address, but I could not contact her and her help forum did not respond either.

I have followed the advice of other forum members and have run the windows debugger on the .mdmp files. I have posted that output in my post on this problem in the Windows XP forum under joemiller. That gave no insight. I also ran the new Windows one care website which found some spyware that none of the other programs found. The HijackThis log follows.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi and welcome to Bleeping Computer! My name is Sam and I will be helping you.
I apologize for the delay getting to your log, the helpers here are very busy.

Your issue is likely not caused by any type of malware. Check this link for a patch from Microsoft that may resolve it for you.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=894391

There are a few lines in your log that we should clean up as well.
Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of the lines listed below. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u
O16 - DPF: {26098EA2-C95D-48EA-89B4-63C5A63BD42F} - http://www.pacimedia.com/install/pcs_0031.exe

Reboot and post a new hijackthis log.
Let me know if that patch does the trick for you.
Posted Image If I have helped you in any way, please consider a donation to help me continue the fight against malware.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

Sam,
I think that fix may have worked, since I did not get the svchost error message after applying the fix. I want to monitor it for a couple days since once before the problem went away and then came back! This is surprising to me since I always download MS fixes from BigFix.

If you have any insights about my pptIRDA boot failure, I'd appreciate your thoughts on that one. I thought it might be infrared data access driver that needed updating, but I did that to no avail. Anyway, that is described in my last post.

Here is the most current HijackThis log.

Your log doesn't show any signs of malware and your issues don't seem to indicate any type of malware infection. So I recommend that you start a new thread in the more appropriate forum. You'll get more qualified assistance there.

Good luck!

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

Sam,
I agree. The basic problem is solved once I got the MS update that corrects the previous update. I'm still having problems with my IR driver, but there has been little help with that topic. I'd be happy to close this topic, but don't know how. It did not seem to be in the new user stuff. Maybe after a while it is shut down automatically, if no activity?
Best,
joemiller
