Hi

I'm trying to help out a friend who has been having problems with her machine. At the moment, her internet connection is intermittent, so I am posting on her behalf.

A few weeks ago, her pc started to become noticeably slow when browsing. Typing into documents is excrutiatingly slow as is browsing. I used the advice given on here, and have got her to complete most if not all of the tasks required prior to posting. Yesterday, she noticed that not only was her pc slow, but that a number of windows that she hadn't opened, kept popping up, and the only way to close them all was to shut down. Since then, it has been difficult for her to get online for any length of time. I did manage to get her to send me an up-to-date HJT log. While the various antispyware/virus progs have cleaned her machine somewhat, the problems still remain. Could someone please check through the log and advise us as to what is going on?

Hello,

It's very difficult for me to read the HijackThis as it is. Please post it again, but make sure the 'word wrap' is unchecked in the 'Format' menu. Thanks. :thumbsup:

Cheers.

As this is my friend's problem, this is how I received the log file. I have now manually 'unwrapped' the text as it is late here, so I won't be in contact with her until tomorrow. If this log isn't good enough, please say and I'll get her to send me another unwrapped log tomorrow.

Hi,

Thanks for doing that. :thumbsup:

I see that she has the Macrogaming SweetIM installed. You must be aware that they collect info from your computer. Read their EULA here: I would recommend that she removes/uninstalls it.

Bearshare is a p2p file sharing program. I think the nature of P2P filesharing is so that even if one is using a "clean" program, many of the files downloaded from non-documented sources have the potential of being infected. So, regardless of whether one is using a "clean" program, one may still be prone to infection by malware. I would recommend that she removes Bearshare also.

===============================

The Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.0.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6.0 windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

===============================

We'll need to disable the realtime scanners for the duration of the fix so that they will not interfere with the fixes. Once the computer is clean she can turn them back on.

Disable WinPatrol
- Right Click the 'Scotty Dog' icon in the system tray
- Click Options
- At the bottom of the options page, Uncheck Automatically Run WinPatrol When Computer Starts
-Click the X in the upper right corner to end program.
- Right Click the 'Scotty Dog' icon in the system tray again.
- Click Exit Program
WinPatrol is now disabled and will not start at bootup.

===============================

Right-click on the SG icon in your system tray and SpywareGuard should open.
Click "Options" and then uncheck these options under the "General" tab:
Enable Real-Time Scanning
Enable Download Protection
Enable Browser Hijack Protection
Click "Save Settings"

================================

Scan with HijackThis and put a checkmark against the following entries:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u

Close all browsers including this one and click on "fix checked".

================================

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of
    in your thread in the HijackThis Log Help Forum.

  • Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simply
  • Click the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
  • copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:

    C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt

  • Click Upload.
=============================

Please download BlackLight Beta Graphical User Interface version, and save it to your desktop. Click on BlackLight Beta to scan with it. When the scan is completed, there will be a report on your desktop named "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log". Please post that log in your next reply.

=============================

Please post back

main.txt
extra.txt
fsbl-xxxxxxx.log

Hi

Thanks for your help so far. Cathryn (my friend with pc trouble) has emailed me the logs. I've manually 'unwrapped' again as she copied the results into the body of emails, rather than sent attachments to me. This why the Blacklight log is named as it is. Please let me know if it's necessary to redo the logs.

Cheers,

Tay

Hi,

Eusing Free Registry Cleaner is a rogue program. Please remove it from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

I notice that you have MSN Messenger plus! 3 and Messenger Plus! Live installed. The file msgplus.exe is distributed as a third party MSN extension. However it is also spyware if installed with the sponsor programme it offers to install. If this optional sponsor programme was installed, this process monitors your browsing habits and distributes the data back to the author's servers for analysis. This also prompts advertising pop-ups.

Please uninstal/remove them until your PC has been declared clean, then you can if you wish download a fresh copy, but this time read the EULA and do not grant permission for the third party software.

I noticed that you're using BitLord and LimeWire which are p2p file sharing programs. I think the nature of P2P filesharing is so that even if one is using a "clean" program, many of the files downloaded from non-documented sources have the potential of being infected. So, regardless of whether one is using a "clean" program, one may still be prone to infection by malware. I would strongly recommend that you also remove them from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

SweetIM is still showing as the main start page in the HijackThis log.

===================================

Make sure that SpywareGuard and WinPatrol are disabled, as instructed earlier.

Scan with HijackThis and put a checkmark against the following entries:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://home.sweetim.com[/b]

Close all browsers/windows and click on "fix checked".

====================================

Using Windows Explorer (right click on Start, click on Explore), locate and delete the following folders, if found:

C:\Program Files\Macrogaming
C:\Program Files\Messenger Plus! Live
C:\Program Files\Eusing Free Registry Cleaner
C:\Program Files\BitLord
C:\Program Files\LimeWire
C:\Program Files\MessengerPlus! 3
C:\Program Files\Messenger Plus! Live

=====================================

Please download Ccleaner and save it to your desktop.
Tutorial for CCleaner
During the installation be sure to UN-check the box for "Ccleaner Yahoo Toolbar" unless you want it. Do not scan with it yet.

Thanks for your ongoing help, and sorry for the delay in replying. Cathryn is still having problems with her pc which is intermittently unresponsive - she has said that it is worse than ever. She attempted the Panda scan, but is unable to view a report. In the bottom left of her screen she is told there is an error on the page. The HJT log is below, and the other two reports are attached.

Hi,

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop.
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your next reply.

Hi,

Nothing in the logs to indicate malware. I still see Messenger Plus! 3 and Messenger Plus! Live, which I asked her to uninstall and delete their folders (post #8). Did she reinstall them without the sponsor program?

===================================

She attempted the Panda scan, but is unable to view a report. In the bottom left of her screen she is told there is an error on the page.

Let's try with another scanner then:

run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
  • Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information from Kapersky in your next post.

*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware app you use.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Or use Firefox with IE-Tab plugin

Hi

She has said that she followed your instructions carefully, and believed that she had got rid of what she was supposed to... She is the only one using the pc until its issues have been resolved, so her offspring haven't reinstalled Messenger. I'll get her to run through the de-installation again to make sure. She has also said that her pc is still being a pain to work on as windows are still popping open from time to time, and it also still 'hangs'. She'll do the Kapersky scan tomorrow and I'll post back to you.

Thanks again.

Can you also ask her to get a startup list please?

Please open HijackThis.
Click on Open Misc Tools Section
Make sure that both boxes beside "Generate StartupList Log" are checked:
  • List all minor sections(Full)
  • List Empty Sections(Complete)
Click Generate StartupList Log.
Click Yes at the prompt.
It will open a text file. Please copy the entire contents of that page and paste it here

Hi

I've pasted the startup list below this text. Cathryn is having trouble getting the report from the Kaspersky scan, though. She is being told that the security level should be set to medium (it is) and that she needs administrator rights (she has). She said that she will persevere with it, but has no idea what might be causing this; neither have I.

Cheers,

Tay
