Hi -

Please follow these directions in the order stated.
You will need to print these directions because you will be working in Safe Mode without an Internet connection.

Uninstall the following programs if present
- Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
- Select the following, one at a time, and click Remove for each one
Oin
Yazzle by Oin
Purityscan by Oin
Snowballwars by Oin
Cowabanga by OIN

- or anything similar with Oin in it.

If OIN not listed, download and run this uninstaller
http://www.outerinfo.com/OiUninstaller.exe

Reboot when done! Really important!

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.
Do NOT run the program yet.

Reboot into SAFE MODE and choose your regular account.
To get into the Windows XP Safe Mode, restart your computer and, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times. Choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear and press Enter.

Start HijackThis, click System Scan Only and place a checkmark next to the following items:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\windows\system32\blank.htm
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\windows\system32\blank.htm
O2 - BHO: (no name) - >37613-BAD7-9D75-F9DC-B3DECCB458C9} - (no file)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Crau] "C:\WINNT\ASKS~1\wuaclt.exe" -vt wnew
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/133b454631654f...ip/RdxIE601.cab

Close ALL browsers and open windows/programs leaving just HijackThis and click 'Fix Checked'.

Navigate to and delete the following folders if present:
C:\Program Files\Oin
C:\Program Files\Yazzle by Oin
C:\Program Files\Purityscan by Oin
C:\Program Files\Snowballwars by Oin
C:\Program Files\Cowabanga by OIN
- or any other folder in Program Files with Oin in it

The next folder to delete is trickier. The folder to delete is: C:\WINNT\ASKS~1
NOTE WELL: This folder will begin with the letters ASKS. Inside the folder, you will see the file wuaclt.exe which is how you will know that this is the correct folder to delete.

Run SDFix
  • Right-click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
  • Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the script.
  • It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back in your reply with a new HijackThis log.

Thanx Waterfalls. My apologies for not doing this sooner. I didn't know how to navigate the posts and made some mistakes. At any rate, here are the latest logs. I followed your instructions as closely as possible. The oo5oDA18DE71}... had different characters where you had ...ip/. I checked it anyway. No Oin folders were found. Quite a learning experience for me. However, I don't pretend to understand it.

Well, the scan confirmed that you had backdoor bots on your computer. You also had a mild Purity Scan infection. Do NOT do any online transactions until we have finished and change your passwords at sensitive websites from a computer you know to be uninfected.

Please set your system to show all files.
- Go to Start > open My Computer
- Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
- Select the View tab and, under Hidden files and folders, select Show hidden files and folders
- Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types
- Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
- Click Apply, then OK

Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5.
(This is Ewdio 4.0 renamed. If you already have Ewido installed, please update to this version which has a special "clean driver" for removing persistent malware)
1. After download, double click on the file to launch the install process.
2. Choose a language, click "OK" and then click "Next".
3. Read the "License Agreement" and click "I Agree".
4. Accept default installation path: C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, click "Next", then click "Install".
5. After setup completes, click "Finish" to start the program automatically or launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking its icon on your desktop or in the system tray.
6. The main "Status" menu will appear. Select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Shield' and 'Automatic Updates'.
7. Then right click on AVG Anti-Spyware in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".
8. Go to Start > Run and type: services.msc
  • Press "OK".
  • Click the "Extended tab" and scroll down the list to find AVG Anti-Spyware guard.
  • When you find the guard service, double-click on it.
  • In the Properties Window > General Tab that opens, click the "Stop" button.
  • From the drop-down menu next to "Startup Type", click on "Manual".
  • Now click "Apply", then "OK" and close the Services window.
9. Select the "Update" button and click "Start update". Wait until you see the "Update succesfull message. If you are having problems with the updater, manually update with the AVG Anti-Spyware Full database installer from here. Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done
Do NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot into SAFE MODE.
To get into the Windows XP Safe Mode, restart your computer and, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times. Choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear and press Enter.

Navigate to and delete the following folder if present:
C:\WINNT\ASKS~1
This folder was placed there by an infection and uses different fonts which makes it harder for HijackThis to discern. The folder begins with the letters ASKS and contains the file wuaclt.exe

Scan with AVG Anti-Spyware as follows:
1. Launch AVG Anti-Spyware, click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.
  • Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.
  • Under "How to Scan?" check all (default).
  • Under "Possibly unwanted software" check all (default).
  • Under "What to Scan?" make sure "Scan every file" is selected (default).
  • Under "Reports" select "Automatically generate report after every scan" and UNcheck "Only if threats were found".
2. Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
3. Click "Complete System Scan" to start.
4. When the scan has finished you will be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.

IMPORTANT! Do not save the report before you have clicked the Apply all actions button. If you do, the log that is created will indicate "No action taken" making it more difficult to interpret the report. So be sure you save it only AFTER clicking the "Apply all actions?" button.

5. Click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans. Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt. Save to your desktop. A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports\
6. Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done, reboot normally and submit the log report in your next response.

Note: Close all open windows, programs, and DO NOT USE the computer while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning. If Explorer or other programs are open during the scan that means certain files will also be in use. Some malware will insert itself and hide in areas that are "protected" by Windows when the files are being used. This can hamper AVG Anti-Spyware's ability to clean properly and may result in reinfection.

Reboot into Normal Mode

Post back with the AVG Anti-Spyware log and a new HijackThis log.
Take only memories, leave nothing but footprints.

Hi W,

The AVG revealed some things. BTW, I'm running 2000 Pro, not XP. I know the kernel is NT for both, but that's about all I know. When opening AVG in Safe Mode, the left side "settings" checkboxes were off the screen. I assumed they were checked as default. There was no ASKS~1 folder in WINNT. Here are the latest scan results.

You have two anti-virus programs installed - Avast and PC Tools AntiVirus. Having more than one AV installed will likely cause your system to run slowly and/or become unstable as well as seriously decrease the reliable detection of any malware since the two AV's will likely "compete" against each other.
You can keep both programs, but you must disable the real-time component of one AV, keeping it as an on-demand scanner, while the other AV will provide a real-time protection.
The alternative is to uninstall one AV and keep the other.

You have an outdated version of Java which, because of security reasons, needs to be updated. To update Java:
- Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
- Click the "Download" button to the right.
- Check the box at the top that says: "Accept License Agreement".
- The page will refresh.
- Click on the top link to download "Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language" and save to your Desktop.
- Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
- Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java by checking any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the coffee cup icon next to it.
- Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
- Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
- Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
- Then from your Desktop, double-click on the downloaded Java file to install the newest version.

Post back with a new HijackThis log. Also, let me know how your computer is running now.
Take only memories, leave nothing but footprints.

New Java's in, old Java's out. And thanx for the AV heads up. I'm aware that they will conflict if both real time elements are running. The Avast is there on the advice of my local computer shop. I will remove anything I need to on your advice. My system is running MUCH better now. TY

Well, if your local computer shop told you to install Avast, then they should have advised you about running two AV's. Avast has a good detection rate. I'm not familiar with PC Tools' AV. The choice is really yours.

Your log looks clean.

Please set your system to hide system files.
- Go to Start and open My Computer
- Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
- Select the View Tab and, under Hidden files and folders, check Do not show hidden files and folders
- Check Hide file extensions for known file types
- Check Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
- Click Apply, then OK.

If you have not done so, please empty your Recycle Bin.

Install IE-SPYAD puts over 20,000 sites in your restricted zone, so you will be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that are not actually innocent at all.

* Avoid illegal sites because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside pop-ups. If you should get them, use ALT + F4 to close them.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software because most of these so-called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Let your anti-virus and anti-spyware scanners scan frequently and don't forget to update before scanning.

More information on how to prevent malware can be found at So how did I get infected in the first place? (by Tony Klein).

Happy surfing again!

Kudos to you! You've got my well earned respect and gratitude. Running the two AVs simultaneously was my fault. My local shop actually did advise me of the perils of that. Thanx also for the additional advice concerning pop ups, etc. I'll heed it well and I plan to study the tutorials. You provide a great service. Again, thanx to you and the rest at BC.

Cheers,
Randy Means
