A torrent is a file created with either a torrent creator or a torrent client. When you create a torrent, you're creating a profile of a file(s) to be downloaded. You don't actually package the files, just the information of them. Once a torrent is created... the extension is .torrent, you will then need a torrent client to download and (or) share the file.

The difference with .torrents and other downloads is that with .torrent files, you're getting that file from numerous people,, with each person giving you a bit of it until you have the complete file.
